Embarrassing internet newbie gaffs

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Mine is thinking "cyber" meant "talk online" and asking another girl in a chatroom if she wanted to (I was twelve - looking back my "best friend" might have told me cyber meant chat to trick me into saying something like that). I'm so glad it wasn't a pervert and I just got asked if I was a lesbian.

When I had just started on the internet, I thought that everyone typed in all lowercase with no punctuation, and that if you did otherwise you would be looked down on. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a bit of a wasted opportunity (just think: I could have been an 8-year-old using proper grammar in chat rooms!).

When I first started using message boards (around age 11, maybe a bit younger) I posted under a fake name and gave myself a whole backstory that included living in a city I'd never been to. I made some friends online and rather than telling them the truth, I just created a new screen name and started posting as a newbie under my own name. Looking back on it I feel really bad, but also kind of amazed that no one ever called me out on it.

I started drama in whatever chat room I started out in. Had a few usernames too.

Watching tumblr people post on 4chan requesting 4chan be more like tumblr and stop swearing/posting porn/bara threads

So much secondhand embarrassment. Different parts of the internet have different, ah, communication styles, and tumblr type threads are not / style.

I thought you were supposed to automatically rate slash fic higher than het and didn't see why that smacked of homophobia. I mean, I get it now, but at the time everyone seemed to do it so I just thought it was a thing.
