Battling burnout.

[personal profile] cakemage 2013-10-06 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
So my semester isn't even half over and I'm already so burned out and overwhelmed that I don't know what to do. I've got a ten-minute presentation on Monday and I'm only 2/3rds of the way done and honestly the thought of doing anything more on it just makes me want to curl up into a little ball and scream until I pass out, then wake up and do it again because I've still got two months of this shit left. It doesn't help that my antidepressant meds are being adjusted right now and I'm all fucked up in the head because of that. Withdrawing from the classes isn't an option, and even if it was, I wouldn't do it, because this is my second-to-last semester and I really, really want to get it all over with. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on working through academic burnout.

Eh, I used to manage burnout with a rigid schedule that ruled my life, but I wouldn't recommend it. It made me a little neurotic after four years.

Still, you have much more discipline than I do, and there is something to be said for that.

Get plenty of sleep.

With respect to food, I've been told that eating healthfully improves you're ability to think, but all I ever did was bribe myself with junk food.

You might feel better if you can just talk about the situation to an advisor or counselor.

Try not to stress. I know that's kind of a stupid thing to say, but sometimes you can hit a sort of pseudo-calm spot on the other side of stressed?

Seeing a counselor might not be a bad idea. If classes aren't cancelled on Monday because of tropical storm Karen, I may head to campus early and see about setting up an appointment. Thanks for the suggestion!

No real help, just wanted to say I feel you. I'm right there too - though mine is from having a paper due every week, on top of tests, other papers, and all the other stuff.

In a way, it really is kind of comforting to know that I'm not the only one who's had to struggle to get by academically. Makes me feel like less of a worthless idiot, you know?

Anyway, I'm likewise totally with you on the paper every week along with other papers/assorted homework. At least I don't have tests (other than the occasional pop quiz) to worry about on top of that. So...yeah. Hang in there!

By the way, what's your major, if you don't mind my asking?

AYRT

Where are you going that you don't have tests? ;A;

And I'm a foreign languages major, but at the moment I'm just knocking out my core.

I'm an English major (specifically focused on Creative Writing as opposed to Literature). It's not that my school doesn't have tests, it's that there aren't any in the classes I'm taking. It's all essays and presentations and suchlike.

Foreign Languages sounds pretty cool. Which one(s) do you plan to focus on the most?

look into meditation, maybe? that sort of mental exercise clears your mind, relaxes your body and helps establish a line break between one chunk of work and the next

definitely eat and sleep well

if it's at all possible, go to bed early and wake up early rather than stay up late working; it does vary from person to person, but generally you get more rest out of the hours you sleep before midnight

like, if you sleep from 9 pm to 5 am you are getting more rest out of it than if you slept from 12 am to 8 am

Yeah, that makes sense. I've no doubt that my inability to get decent sleep is a major contributing factor to my various issues. I'm working on that with my doctors now, though, so hopefully I'll get some relief in that area soon. I'm also trying to eat healthier, take more vitamins and do some form of exercise every day, though I'm really having to take it slow in that regard because of my many health and pain issues.

No good advice really, but when it comes to working on a lot, spend 45 min concentrating on the work, then 15 min break where you don't think about it, then work again, and just put in some longer breaks once in a while. That helps me some, other than that: Eat healthily, get plenty of sleep and try to get outside at least once a day to take a walk or something similar.

Also I am sure you will manage to finish! I believe in you!
