(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Sometimes something clicks.

And sometimes something is just a good story.

I always have mixed feelings, because I love me some smut, but I also love epic friendships in fiction. And with a lot of pairs it could just go either way.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Or both. The two are not mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always amused by these kinds of secrets.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This is actually a great secret. And an actual secret. Crazy rare 'round these parts, OP.

Oh god not that one

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Mediocre? It's *appallingly bad*. There is far, far better fic free on the net.

Also: friends *and* lovers. That's the key.

Any recs, then?

A few, but there are lots more, not as much as BBC Sherlock obviously.

Authors worth checking out:

just for a start.

Oh god, I know it, I was trying to save some modicum of face. It's horrible, but I adore it, and I keep reading it. The mystery is transparent as air, the structure of the whole story is atrocious, the language is flowery beyond reason, and yet...huff. I'm a lost cause.

I am, however, finding some excellent fic, you are right about that.

And I'm starting to get the friends and lovers concept; I'd definitely been laboring under the impression that the two are mutually exclusive.

NA

The fact that it's terrible might actually help you. Then you can still make fun of how terrible the story is, while enjoying it at the same time. That may sound weird, but it is totally a thing that can happen. I have friends that I love to mock/enjoy silly fic with, maybe yours will be the same way!

Yeah, it's a common trope, and slashers do it too. But if you lose the friendship with these two, you lose everything that makes them work.

I'm neutral to Holmes/Watson (neutral in the sense that romance and platonic friendship are equally pleasing interpretations of their relationship to me) but this (involving really good fics, usually) has totally happened with me for some other couples. IMO it's a case of "I don't see it, I don't see it, OH! Wait! That's how it works :)"

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe your virulent opposition was rooted in your deep down fear of what you might really feel about it?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It could be, I won't lie. I was definitely staying away from the shippiness rather than looking it over fairly and determining that I still didn't believe they were more than friends, so maybe there was a bit of fear about it.

Is it wrong that once I read "mediocre pastiche" I wanted to read it?

I dislike Holmes/Watson as a romantic pairing, but not as much as I dislike the idea of paying for fanfic.

What's involved in virulent anti-shipping? That seems like it would take effort.

Does anyone think "the original intent of the text" was to suggest homoerotic aspects to their relationship?

I read a couple of the stories once but they were since vastly overshadowed in my mind by the various film interpretations.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
ACD's view was that gay men were sick, so no.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Please see my reply to anon below for quote. There have been several scholars who read homoerotic subtext, or at least Holmes as a gay man, in the stories, most notably "Strangers" by Graham Robb. A really good book on the subject, I recommend it.

Well, that's something I've never heard, and I have read a lot by and about Doyle.

But there isn't even any real subtext between Holmes and Watson in the original stories. They're very close friends and roommates but if you want to get anything more than that you have to invent things between the lines and reconstrue a lot of the stuff Watson says about himself and about Holmes. If you want some concrete evidence that Watson is not into Holmes, compare his descriptions of the various ladies he totally crushes on with his description of Holmes. There's a huge tonal difference.

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-10-08 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's my admittedly very vague and dated impression of the stories as well. But still I wonder if there are some, like, scholars who read homoeroticism into the stories.

I can't imagine Doyle ever saying anything like Ew, homosexuals/sodomites - so I was curious whether the anon you replied to may have been referring to a passage from the books that would suggest that. Unless the anon is just informing me about what they perceive to be the mentality of Doyle's times.
