You're misunderstanding the test.

The "test" was really a joke from a comic strip.

The point isn't passing an arbitrary test. The point is to point out how few movies have multiple fully realized female characters.

Yeah, but a lot of people get pissed off if you point this out to them. I hate how the Bechdel test has become the be-all end-all feminism litmus test in some circles. Some of the shittiest, most un-feminist movies ever made have technically passed the test. (Case in point: the 2009 Star Trek film.)

Yes, but thankfully, you do not need to listen to people who don't understand how feminist criticism works.

I don't think either of the new Trek pass the Bechdel test, actually.

I don't remember any female characters in Star Trek except Uhura and her roommate, whose only conversation is about the roommate's bringing men home constantly, and while Into Darkness gave Carol a large role, I don't think she and Uhura (again, the only female characters in the movie, aside from a few random backgrounders) actually interacted. I'm not sure they were ever even in the same room.

Uhura and Gaila (the roommate) talk about Uhura's work in the lab. It's a technical pass, not a good one.

Exactly. It's pointing out that even a basic, blunt criteria like this FAILS most of the time, and that is mostly invisible and SHOCKING. It's a wake up call to do better. The characters AREN'T saying anything that passes this test is great.

Ahh memories, this was one of my favourite comics at uni.
