First world problems

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
People love to say "first world problems," and I'm starting to find the term kind of... offensive. It's as though people in third world countries never have problems with their mother-in-laws or things breaking or whatever else. If you honestly think you're poor because you can't afford a Yacht, then yes, you may have first world problems. Being upset that you argued with your brother? Not so much.

I thought about that, too - I get what you mean and agree to some extent. Most people probably have silly petty problems no matter where you're from.

But on the other hand, I thought "first world problems" were SUPPOSED to be complaining about things you're actually really privileged about, particularly economically. For example "I hate that I need two wireless routers to use the Internet because my house is too big for just one." or "My bf gave me the $1000 designer handbag I wanted, but he picked brown instead of black and I hate the color."

I mean, I thought the joke was that the person knows it's ridiculously stupid and it shows how wealthy/lucky they are. Like, making fun of themselves for complaining about it.

not that it's always used that way, to be fair.

I looked at it from the other side and thought the joke was "these are the only problems people in first world countries have" instead of "only the people in first world countries have these problems". I don't know.
