Oh, stewardess! I speak 4chan.

"Why would you pay for a site with a worse userbase than reddit or 4chan [both of which are free], and twice the smug sense of superiority and hypocrisy? I laugh at you."

I think I just have no idea what the site is...It looks like an anime in the screenshot.

Personally after I read what SA users were like and specifically how badly they treated people like me (mildly Autistic / Aspergers here) I don't trust that place and don't want much to do with it.

I've actually been sporked on SA. They were . . . not pleasant. It felt like they created a conception of me that they could easily hate, then interpreted the whole story to fit that conception, even when that barely made any sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but you can defend yourself! Some parts of the site can be surprisingly rational when someone speaks up with the truth. (Other parts will laugh derisively at you and circle in for the kill, of course.) And all you have to do is pay for the privilege -- a real bargain! Of course, if you're unable or unwilling to do so for any reason, you're obviously pubbie Tumblr subhuman scum and deserve anything the real people throw at you.

I totally read that as
">Paying for a site with a whore user base"

it made me hyuk

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
If Reddit is what 4chan users who have grown up, ie. flawed human beings who don't always get things right but have some self awareness about it; Something Awful is what happens when 4chan users grown older without any hints of personal development.

I avoid SA in general, but when I accidentally get there, it unsettles me on how easily I could've ended up like that.

Seriously, I'm pretty sure the way they act is the reason WHY the paywall is up so often. I want to read my LPs just as much as they do, why the fuck can't they behave themselves or just not get accounts?

I'm pretty sure Lowtax has explicitly said he puts LP under the paywall more often to keep the Dangan Ronpa thread shenanigans at bay/to troll people who complain about it. If that doesn't sit well with you then SA is indeed probably not the place for you

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of baffling. When the paywall's down, non-SA users have no reason to sign up and join in on the thread -- they'll just keep talking about it on Tumblr or whatever other social site they prefer, and the SAers can just ignore them. But when the paywall's up, fans who haven't found a mirror site get the urge to join. And then 'pollute' the thread with their non-SA-approved posting style. Blocking the non-'goons' out just encourages them to bring all their annoyance right into the faces of everyone in SA.

(The secret, of course, is that it's about money. Encouraging Dangan Ronpa fans to join, and buy avatars, and then get banned, and then pay to rejoin -- Lowtax has found a gold mine. And he doesn't even have to work for it -- it's all the work of Spike/Chunsoft (creators of the game) and orenronren and Fedule (who are translating it), none of whom see a dime for their efforts.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really a secret, lowtax/SA is pretty up front about that

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but someone really needs to tell the goons. Despite it all they still insist on believing that the subscription fees are just a formality to keep out the riff-raff and get a better quality of discourse. Seriously. I guess once you've bought into the system, you're inclined to defend it. (And anyone with a reasonable argument against them won't generally be paying to get into their bubble in the first place, so most of the counterarguments they hear are from the people foolish enough to pay money to join a site they dislike.)

I love it when people complain about the paywall. Especially tumblr.

I just don't understand how hard it is for people to comprehend the idea of a somewhat private forum, or paying for content. These crazy youth!
toshi_hakari: (Default)

[personal profile] toshi_hakari 2013-10-09 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, no one's forced to buy an account there and I couldn't give two shits because SDR2 is being mirrored.
But honestly, paying for a forum is silly to me, because I've never seen a forum where the content was actually worth any money.

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2013-10-09 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Then keep not complaining about it? Is that what you're saying?
The people who do, whether or not they're aware of the mirror, are kind of stupid and entitled. They want to read the lp asap, but for reals guys not that badly, so they make a post to whine about it.

It's like when someone gets upset that their favourite writer keeps their work behind a friend/member lock.

Why are people complaining now that the Dangan Ronpa LP is hosted on lparchive, which doesn't have a paywall?

Dangan Ronpa 2 isn't on the archive yet (if it's finished). Not to mention that if the third game is LP'd, this mess will continue.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
That said, orenronren has officially approved a mirror that stays open when the paywall is up. (danganronpa2mirror on Tumblr.) It's usually a few hours or more behind the official updates, because the maintainer has to copy everything over by hand, but at least it works.
