Please, please don't fetishize us Sami. Don't turn us into your newest pet cause. Your American concept of POC does not work in Scandinavia any more than it works in Asia or anywhere else that isn't the USA.

Mostly likely saying condescending things like, "You don't know what is good for you. We are trying to help. You don't know how bad it can get. First Disney and the next thing every white person is going to be wearing Sami hats! It will be a cultural holocaust!!!!!!!111111111"

I'm nowhere near Europe and I rolled my eyes the moment people brought up the Sami people as an alternative to 'white' people. It was so 'find a pet cause to support my argument without actually knowing about it'. It's embarrassing that people are still using the argument.

It doesn't help that there are some Sami people on tumblr calling themselves POCs even though they are pale as snow, blond and redheaded with blue eyes.

I think a better term would be indigenous. But there's a tumblr belief that people of European heritage can't be indigenous to anywhere. So, there's that.

I support a person's right to call themselves whatever they want.
That said, since this is *tumblr*, I'd have to practically see this redhead's ID before I believed s/he's a Sami (instead of your typical American tumblrite who has a, say, Sami grandfather she has met once when she visited Sweden as a kid). After all the site is bursting at the seams with Otherkin, etc.

I think they allow people to call themselves 'poc' as long as they're supporting the argument.

But if they call themselves poc and argue a point that doesn't jive with the hive, then they're questioned and/or told they've been brainwashed.

Yeah, seems like virtually all of the tumblr people mentioning the Sami seem to have no idea who they actually are, and if anyone does point out facts they don't listen.

Which of course is not uncommon on tumblr.

Or they are pointing to 100+ year old tin type photographs that make Sami look dark though no one points out tin type photographs make everyone look dark. They would make albinos look ruddy and tanned.

Kinda related to that picture, that man is Finish and me and a friend had this (completely non serious discussion) about how Finns look a lot more Scandinavian than Norwegians and how odd that is...

Frozen is based off a fairytale from Hans Christian Andersen (the same Danish guy who wrote The Little Mermaid)

and there was a tumblr post about how they were whitewashing the characters for the movie... a movie that's set in a place very much like somewhere in Scandinavia.

Also, as a Scandinavian you have to be very, very careful when insisting you're white. ("What do you mean you're white? Why don't you want to be called a POC? Are you saying POCs are inferior?! You're a racist!")

Well, Princess and the Frog was based on (an American adaptation of) a German story, and that one seemed to do okay. </devil's advocate>

Point, but they specifically wrote it set in New Orleans so it makes sense. There would've been a real uproar for it to be set in the South and be all white people because that really wouldn't make sense.

They're complaining about the characters in Frozen not being black when it's set in what one can assume in one of the Scandinavian countries (or Finland). They're also complaining that it's appropriating an indigenous group they want to label POC when the group is, in reality, white.

I wouldn't call it whitewashing.
But I've also seen the dumbest fucking arguments about how [fantasy movie/TV series] can only have white people in it because everyone else would've been slaves. If a story has magic, dragons or similar, it strikes me as weird to claim the cast should be "historically accurate" aka all-white. And this movie has talking snowmen.

I think that's a fair point, especially since they're almost always wrong that "everyone else would've been slaves" (or "they were only white people there then." And yeah, even if they were right it's not like this is a documentary.

But still, some people on tumblr are doing the tumblr thing and trying to make this fit a dynamic it doesn't really fit (white-washing and appropriation), even though the basic point that Disney didn't need to make yet another movie all about white people seems valid as it stands.

I thought people were angry that the girl faces are all exactly the same and then the boys get all different faces and people were saying girl faces are harder to do, so talked about hair, when it's the faces and eyes and body shapes people are angry about

Also yeah Frozen looks pretty boring and generic.
