Funny to find out the sjws are grasping for straws to try to argue against white characters in a movie based off of a Scandinavian story.

I've seen a post where they literally call it whitewashing.

Also there is a film based on a Scandinavian story? How did I miss this?

Wait? Whitewashing of Sami people? Or Scandinavians? Because hate to break it to the people of tumblr. but you can't get any whiter than Scandinavians, have you seen our people?

Kinda related to that picture, that man is Finish and me and a friend had this (completely non serious discussion) about how Finns look a lot more Scandinavian than Norwegians and how odd that is...

Frozen is based off a fairytale from Hans Christian Andersen (the same Danish guy who wrote The Little Mermaid)

and there was a tumblr post about how they were whitewashing the characters for the movie... a movie that's set in a place very much like somewhere in Scandinavia.

Which one, I can't recall one named Frozen? H.C. Andersen was my bedtime stories when I grew up (amusingly The Little Mermaid was my favourite, and I hated the film)

HOW CAN YOU WHITEWASH SCANDINAVIANS? We are white, like seriously white especially if you go back in history (our slaves were also white when we had slaves) of course today we do have POC in Scandinavia, but I am pretty sure we didn't have that many when H.C Andersen wrote his stories, which when he wrote them down already had been told for quite some time

It's The Snow Queen. The similarities in storyline seem to be basically nonexistent, though.

Huh, ah well they already killed The Little Mermaid story and no one is complaining about that or are they? I stay away from Disney fandom, they scare me so how much worse can it be?

That's basically the question when any rational person reads posts from tumblr about it, and that's the point OP was trying to make. People on tumblr are trying to find something wrong with the movie by saying they're "appropriating Saami culture and making it about white people" or "all the characters are white they're whitewashing".

Hm, why can't they just use a real argument like: Sami culture though white is still a minority and they deserve their history to be treated with respect? But if it is based on a H.C Andersen story I don't see where it comes into play? I know absolutely nothing about the film so it isn't like I can have an opinion on that...

A cute Finnish man o_O I thought I'd never see the day. Who is that?

Also, as a Scandinavian you have to be very, very careful when insisting you're white. ("What do you mean you're white? Why don't you want to be called a POC? Are you saying POCs are inferior?! You're a racist!")

There are at least two of them:

First up Heikki Huovinen, also known as the Greek God* physiotherapist for Sebastian Vettel on Red Bull (F1 racing):

(To the right, left is Sebastian Vettel)

Then we have Kimi Raikonen, also known as The Iceman F1 Driver:

(To the left, on the right we have Vettel again, whom is not Finish, but German, though he hangs out with a lot of Finns)

*Which is not a tumblr. thing, it was a male journalist that started it...

I know, that is an issue (though not as major as a lot of issues on earth)...

Well, Princess and the Frog was based on (an American adaptation of) a German story, and that one seemed to do okay. </devil's advocate>

Re: I NEED TO VENT

Point, but they specifically wrote it set in New Orleans so it makes sense. There would've been a real uproar for it to be set in the South and be all white people because that really wouldn't make sense.

They're complaining about the characters in Frozen not being black when it's set in what one can assume in one of the Scandinavian countries (or Finland). They're also complaining that it's appropriating an indigenous group they want to label POC when the group is, in reality, white.

Re: I NEED TO VENT

Well, to be fair, I think a lot of people were originally disappointed because the concept art of Frozen looked very promising and the first drafts of the story stuck close to The Snow Queen. Now we have a talking snowman, and characters which are a bit too similar to Tangled's early sketches to really feel new and original. The promo Disney is doing is probably not helping: you have the French/Japanese trailers, with emphasis on the sisters, mystery and powers, and the US trailer, with a lot of slapstick humour.

That said, other people have pointed out, without accusations of white-washing, that Disney *could* have used another setting. It's a Scandinavian story, but it's so far off the original that it could have taken place anywhere in the world. They didn't take a chance, and many people are disappointed with that.

Re: I NEED TO VENT

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
...I think they'd still need the snow.

Re: I NEED TO VENT

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
In the film, at least in the trailers we've seen so far, it's the evil sister who's making it snow, not the weather.

Yeah, but if the story was in some hot ass place in Africa (which is probably the only place the SJW's would be happy with) it'd be a lot of people just freezing to death having nothing prepared for the sudden change in temperature and environment.

You need a place with people that know how to deal with it. That suggests you need to go north.

Granted, you could have, say, an Inuit version or something. But when folks say "well why not a poc version?" well, why not go with the original setting?

Princess and the Frog had a reason better then diversity. They wanted a theme. New Orleans culture was injected into that movie in it's themes, it's appearance, and most definitely it's music, so there you go.

Re: I NEED TO VENT

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call it whitewashing.
But I've also seen the dumbest fucking arguments about how [fantasy movie/TV series] can only have white people in it because everyone else would've been slaves. If a story has magic, dragons or similar, it strikes me as weird to claim the cast should be "historically accurate" aka all-white. And this movie has talking snowmen.

Re: I NEED TO VENT

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a fair point, especially since they're almost always wrong that "everyone else would've been slaves" (or "they were only white people there then." And yeah, even if they were right it's not like this is a documentary.

But still, some people on tumblr are doing the tumblr thing and trying to make this fit a dynamic it doesn't really fit (white-washing and appropriation), even though the basic point that Disney didn't need to make yet another movie all about white people seems valid as it stands.
