Are you... trying to imply that sexuality is not fluid and it's stupid to say it is? Because sexuality is fluid. Not citing SJWs. Citing, you know, psychology. Science.

In general. Sexuality is fluid in general. People are free to explore and re-evaluate and relabel their sexualities all they want, and if that evaluation leads to them looking at the stock of things, nodding, and saying, "Yup, still straight," that's okay.

Dean has had moments where he connected emotionally with other men, and the idea has probably popped into his head a time or two, what with all the gay jokes he's heard and said. And he's still just really into women.

But being really into women has nothing to do with possibly being into men. It's not a one or the other thing.

My point is that "just" refers to who he's slept with in the show. "Just" slept with women doesn't mean 100% straight. And if somehow you're able to look into his mind and see that he is truly "just" into women, you are probably one of the SPN writers, which I think you are not.

All we have to go on is what is shown in the show, what he says and does. Any further speculation or allowance for "maybe he also likes guys when we're not looking" is OOC and irrelevant.

Hell, I'd give my right arm for Dean to be bi. But he's not been shown to be, and that is what fan fiction is for.

You mean this guy who grew in a hyper masculine hunter culture isn't comfortable expressing sexual feelings for men? It'd be OOC for him to just be "Yep. I like cock" without some serious reflection or something. But, he has been shown to be interested in men. We aren't sure if that interest is sexual or not, but he did get pretty swoony.

The only time I recall Dean swooning is when he met a TV character face to face. And uber-masculine upbringing or no, he is how he is. Just because the hunter life might have possibly interfered with his developing a homosexual relationship doesn't mean that he ever would have on his own. I don't understand the logic in saying that if not for hunting, he'd be gay. If not for hunting, a lot of things could've happened for the whole family... but hunting happened, and so here we are.

It's not that "were he not hunting, he'd be gay," it's that he grew up in an environment where it likely wouldn't be okay to act on sexual/romantic feelings for a man (plus, you know, he lives in America where being gay is not okay anyway).

The argument that Dean is not gay because he's never had sex with a man is bullshit. It dismisses all the bisexuals who have never had sex or have never had sex with the someone of the same gender.

It also rather uncomfortably opens a can of worms as to when someone can "officially" choose what their sexual orientation is, regardless of where they fall on the spectrum.

I mean....can a guy identify as gay under this standard if he's only held hands and kissed, but never had penetrative sex? And does he have to try both top and bottom first? Is a woman not straight until her virginity is taken away by a man? Is a lesbian not official until she's been brought to orgasm via cunnilingus with another woman? (and is a woman who has been penetrated by a man but didn't enjoy it because she wasn't attracted to men at the time "straight" until she has sex with a woman?)

And god knows what happens to anyone who has gender reassignment procedures. Do they have to "prove" their sexuality all over again if they engaged in sexual acts BEFORE the surgery?

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that nobody on the SPN writing staff has any intention of Dean being anything but straight. But "he's straight because he's never done anything with a man" is pretty much the same as "dogs have tails. My cat has a tail. Therefore, my cat is a dog".

This and AYRT are trying so hard to miss the point that I can only assume you're doing it on purpose.

It's not that "this man had sex with this woman, therefore he is straight". Sexuality in the real world does not work that way, that is correct. However, Dean Winchester as portrayed on the TV series Supernatural is a 2-dimensional character. We only see certain parts of his life, and all we have to go on are those parts. And they suggest that he is only interested in women. Trying to apply real-world nuances to a fictional character that has been designed to behave a certain way is ridiculous.

You may be done with it, but no, I don't think it's ridiculous to apply real-world nuances to fictional characters. There's a reason we talk about "well-rounded characters".

As I said, I don't think Dean is ever going to be written as gay and therefore will never be so.

But I ALSO think that your statement that real world nuances never apply to fictional characters is silly and kind of dismisses everyone who ever wrote a character that went on a personal journey or changed who he was over the course of the narrative.

But it's not OOC and not irrelevant. You could read just the sex he has on the show - and that's fine, that's what most people would do - but that doesn't invalidate any ambiguously sexual scenes he has with male characters. A character being interested in a same-sex character can't really be OOC because it's not a personality trait - it would depend on how his actions and thoughts are written. And it's certainly not irrelevant to do a gay reading of any media...
