Yeah, I'm not seeing that movie for basically that reason - because I would freak the fuck out.

Accidents in space are fucking scary, okay? I know that already. I know the concept in science fiction frighten me. I don't need to see a whole fucking movie about it.

This. I keep seeing Sandra Bullock talking about what a "beautiful" movie it is, and I can't figure out why she doesn't know it's a horror movie. Even if everybody survives, it's a classic sci-fi horror flick.

Is this movie actually good? It hits all my fears (and I love being scared) but all the obvious cgu in the trailer puts me off.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's effing fantastic.

I saw it and it was excellent. Sandra Bullock should get an award or something. Great writing.

It was also quite scary.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Is the whole movie from her POV? So you only hear other characters? That would be sweet (like Ryan Reynold's Buried).

It was completely awesome.

I was a blown away. And I saw it last Thursday in a special "opening" preview, and at that time I had no idea what it was. My friend asked me to go to the movie, and promised me sci-fi. It's not really sci-fi (at least, not what I think of when I think of sci-fi) but I was pretty much in awe of it and developed a new respect for Sandra Bullock.

It's definitely.. um, unique? in a lot of ways. Only two actors, a woman protagonist in an action/survival movie, no romance... and the whole thing is set in zero gravity. Very cool.

by "no idea what it was" I mean I hadn't even heard of it, let alone been aware of the hype surrounding it. So totally unbiased going in!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Main reason why I didn't go see it, despite a friend offering. I felt bad for saying no, but things like that really scare me, and I had a feeling this movie would spark that fear.

I've always been interested in space, but you're right, this film is really quite terrifying on a basic, almost subconscious level. It really struck me, finally, exactly how precarious it is to leave the planet (and then try to return, for that matter). Dang, mad props to anyone who chooses to do that for a living.

That being said it was a really good movie. And I still like space stuff.

I said after to my friend that maybe it's a good thing NASA doesn't have the funds they used to, because after this, no kid's gonna want to be an astronaut.

I almost went to see that tonight and now I'm glad I didn't because I might have a similar reaction.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I really want to see this! It looks terrifying, but space... I like anything to do with space.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really torn on this movie, because the concept seems awesome, I hear good things about how well-done it was, and I like Sandra Bullock, but I suspect I would also find it fucking terrifying.

It is terrifying (and I'd suggest not seeing it if you have vertigo or get motion sickness watching, say, a game of Portal). But that makes the ending so much better. It's a phenomenal movie. It's not just that it's terrifying--it's visceral. It just gets in deep and leans on a universal human emotion.

I haven't seen it, but when it came out I heard a review of it on the radio and the critic said he felt pretty much the same way you did. If someone whose job is to watch movies found it genuinely terrifying, it's not stupid that you did too.

Huh. I have a deep hatred of scary movies, but it's people/animals that scare and upset me. I found Gravity thrilling, not scary..

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can see that, especially at IMAX. They really did a good job with making you feel like you were there I think :|

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I do have to say, OP, that you are not alone. I had to leave the theatre during parts of "2010", because of feelings of vertigo. It almost got to the point of a panic attack, which, yeah is never fun.

Every premise of this movie is set to hit my "this terrifyes you deeply" button. The thing you described is one of these buttons, so yeah, not going to see it

I glanced at the fandom before reading this secret and read the whole thing thinking it was somehow about the anime Gravitation.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
The preview I saw for it before Pacific Rim started totally freaked me out and i spent the next preview talking myself back down. I pretty much dont remember any of the other previews, and just thought of it creeps me out.
