Plenty of us in fandom are adults who like fanfic. As fandom ages there are likely to be more adults reading/writing fanfic than there are minors. Most of dedicated fic readers and writers seems to fall between 18-30 years of age.

Define adult.

Lol. Damn. I didn't think people would get so defensive about this.

I thought that was the whole appeal of fandom/fanfiction? It's fun and kind of childish and a form of escapism. I think people misinterpreted what I said. I love reading and writing fanfic! And one of the reasons is that is allows me to get away from work and school and other things at least for a little while.

da, doesn't seem defensive to me, just a bit incredulous. Fanfiction as a medium isn't childish, even if lots of its participants are. Fandom goes way beyond the internet as well, and if you ever go to any conventions you're more likely to find adults of all ages (even seniors) being active. So it's a strange thing to say it's a childish form of escapism, since... well, everyone needs escapism.

Hmm, maybe that's the problem. I don't see being "childish" as necessarily a bad thing even though I'm aware the word has negative connotations. For me, it means sometime that's kind of free and uninhibited, like a child. That's what I appreciate about fandom. You get to do things like dress up as characters and make silly comics about shows you like and write stories where you diverge from the canon material.

"Child-like" might be the better word to use if you're looking for a similar meaning minus the connotations.

Yeah, you're right. I looked up both words, and "childlike" seems much more positive than "childish."

Yeah, as far as I know it's specifically supposed to contrast "childish," (it has in every instance I've encountered it) so I'm glad to hear the standard hasn't shifted.

Even if it's meant as a good thing, it's not very accurate, since it's just a misconception that kids are more into fandomy things than adults. I think the associations just need to change, because that's a huge part of why people get shit for liking fandomy things. They get treated like children, and that's patronizing.

Recreation isn't childish, and adults are allowed to have hobbies other than gardening and scrapbooking without being any less "mature."
