Drunk flatmate etiquette

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I watched a late film with some drunk housemates. By the end of it everyone had gone to bed except two of us. He fell asleep and I could not wake him. I tried to wake him up four separate times and eventually left him to sleep on the couch with the lights on so he didn't trip over anything if he woke up. Is that cool?

Er... was he okay? Like, not going to die of alcohol poisoning or choke on his own vomit or anything?

If you have no concern that anything's wrong with him, I think it's perfectly cool to leave him on the couch. If he's drunk enough that you're concerned... I'd suggest starting by waking up your other housemates and insisting they be concerned, too.

I wasn't with them when they were drinking - I think there was weed involved as well - but they all seemed fine when they came downstairs and he just slowly drifted off to sleep so I'm not too worried. Or I wasn't.

If you're unsure of how to tell if there's reason to worry just monitor his breathing for a minute. Less than eight to ten times in a minute and/or his pulse seems unusually fast accompanied by clammy and cold hands you might have cause for some concern.

That's been my rule of thumb anyway.

He's breathing evenly, just very asleep. Thank you!

Make sure that he's sleeping on his side, so he doesn't drown in his own vomit.

Other than that, just let him be, and then make fun of him in the morning.

He's sitting up with his head sort of tilted back. Is that bad? I was mainly just worried about him being in pain when he woke up after sleeping that way but I've never really been around people at this stage of the drinking before.

Yeah, just see if you can kind of tilt him over onto his side or something. It's probably not a big deal, but better safe than sorry.

Agreeing with above anon. As long as you're sure he's not in distress he's a grown adult and you aren't responsible (it might even come across as weird if you did) for tucking him in.

Maybe turn him on his side and leave him a glass of water and an ibuprofen if you want roommate of the year award?

Cool, thanks.
