I bought a housecoat.

[personal profile] rosehiptea 2013-10-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
OK that's not an exciting subject line. The thing is, it's very convenient but I associate them very old women and I'm only forty-six.

I guess I feel like I just took my first step on the road to being truly old. (As opposed to "old for internet fandom.")

I've had housecoats since I was six. They're for warmth and comfort, not exclusively old ladies. (But if it bothers you that much, maybe you could look into getting a kigirumi/footie onesies instead? I've seen a bunch of really cute ones with bright patterns in stores like Stitches and Urban Planet this season, so I'm guessing they'd be fairly easy to find.)

It didn't bother me so much until I I went to Amazon to buy it and saw that most of the reviews were like "I bought this for my 90-year-old mother," "I bought this for my 80-year-old grandmother." But this comment makes me feel better.

The kirigumi is a good idea too.

Me too! Okay, maybe not since I was six, but I know I wore them during my teen years. Now I wear PJ's more, but I honestly see nothing wrong with housecoats.

I only ever wore them when I was about six LOL but then I live in a very warm climate and have no need for them.

That makes me feel better. I actually have a lighter one, for the weather here in California, but I'm going to get a flannel one too.

I have 2 winter housecoats and one summer housecoat. I like them for lounging around and the extra layer is nice in case of random window peepers, haha.

I don't have a flannel one anymore (it was great for fall as it wasn't too warm or too thin), but it was nice when I had it.

Think of all the money you'll save on heating!

They're very common in my country. In fact I'm wearing one right now and I'm not 90! I wear them over pyjamas or night robes, even over my clothes when I'm cold and don't want to sell a kidney to pay for my electricity bill. They're comfy and warm. I have one with dog's head drawn on the hood and it's all snuggly and soft!

I think they only have an "old people" association because they were more commonplace back in the day, when old people were housecoat-wearing young people. And then those same people got old, but didn't stop wearing housecoats, even as housecoat purchases declined overall. I dunno, they're one of those things where I just kind of think "huh, you don't hear about those much anymore," but anyone of any age could wear one. Just like anyone could have a turntable or an analog watch, I guess.

...What is the exact difference between a housecoat and a robe, anyway? I've never been given a straight answer!

I always thought the difference was that a robe has a tied belt but a housecoat snaps up the front. But I've run into people who call that a robe too, so I'm not sure there is a straight answer to this.

Yeah, I have a fleece robe that snaps in the front, and I always just called it a robe, but it seems like other people call the same thing a housecoat, sometimes.

I always assumed official housecoats were those quilted robe things, which are more coat-like than regular robes tend to be. But for all I know, those are just another "robe" variation, or are actually called something else entirely.

...Okay, I'm starting to think housecoats are an urban legend. :P

For me, robes are heavier material and are often made of terrycloth. A housecoat is made of cotton or the like and is worn over pyjamas or loungewear. I've never seen one with snaps; I've only ever seen ties.

But my mom calls them all robes.

I've had a housecoat since my teens because my house was goddamned freezing all the time. My parents slept on the upper floor where it was hotter and my bedroom in the was in the basement. They paid the heating bills, so they cranked the thermostat down to cool levels upstairs which made for sub-arctic ones down.

Since then, well, I have almost no body fat and somehow seem to always find myself living with someone with considerably more padding, and it solves both the thermostat argument and saves money if I just throw on a thick robe instead of having them sweat it out.
