YAOI

My thoughts are that no matter how many times someone explains how to pronounce it to me I always forget.

What I need is an audio clip.

It's yow-way, right?

I always thought it was yowee but I have also heard yah-oi

Yowee is how Scott McNeil pronounces it

I go with it rhyming with wowee.

The last syllable should be a long e sound. :)

yow (if that yow rhymes with wow) and ee.

imagine a kid saying "Owie" after getting hurt, then add y.

I pronounced it yhoy when I was younger, but I believe yowee is the right pronunciation.

yah-oh-ee but fast.

yao-wee

I always read is as YOW in my mind. I don't know WHY my mind likes to ignore the I but it just DOES.

Anybody else have that?

Which always blows my mind, because no one ever seems to struggle with "aoi" (blue/green) when they're learning Japanese. It's not like all of those sounds don't exist in English. Why such debate about "yaoi"?

It's like aoi. But with ya instead of a.

I apologize deeply if this sounds dickish, but the endless debates on how to pronounce yaoi/manga/etc are quite funny for me. It's not like you need to learn phonetic notation to catch the pronunciation... there are clips in youtube with the sound.

Okay now I'm confused. The second way is how I instinctively pronounce it. Maybe I'm misunderstanding other people's attempts to spell the pronunciation. To me it seems like everyone is telling me to pronounce it the "wrong" way according to your link?

Ok, lemme see, since 95% of the sounds in Spanish are the same as the sounds in Japanese (that's why romaji works so well for us), I'll record a clip :3 Give me a sec.

The youtube video you linked worked fine! I'm just confused because it seems like everyone else is saying the first pronunciation is the correct one.

My microphone is awful. Sorry for that. Don't listen to it with the sound too high up.

I... am even more confused. I'm so sorry! The video you linked says the correct pronunciation is Ya-oy but you pronounced it with the -ee sound?

I'm sorry :C I should've checked the youtube video better. Please disregard it.

Yes, that's right.

It comes from the sounds the typical underlubed uke makes when the handsome, giant-handsed upperclassman first tops him.

"Yow! Oy!"

The first one is a Japanese person pronouncing the word. Don't listen to the second clip as it's obviously wrong...

I just realized it sounds like 'Yahweh' pronounced with an accent. Which means I will never unhear it. O.o Thank you!
