Re: Non-Fandom Secrets

I sometimes feel guilty for "passing". I don't like to label but I consider myself asexual and open to a romantic relationship from all gender orientations, but most people assume I'm straight. And I'm okay with that. I don't date, I don't really talk about dating or romance, it's not something that really matters to me. And it would be more hassle to actually go out and tell people my sexual ID - nevermind the fact that most people don't understand or "believe in" asexuality. And I don't really think it's anyone else's business but mine.

Most of the time I don't care. But occasionally I feel guilty.

What is "passing"

Just not mentioning that you're asexual?

Do asexual people act a certain way, now?

"HEY ANON WANNA GO TO THE ORGY?!"

"No, I ah... I have to... I went to an orgy yesterday! (Oh god I feel so bad)"

Are you not familiar with the idea of passing? I thought it was a pretty common thing.

Imo there's a difference between nobody knowing about your private life because you don't feel like talking about it, and being able to to avoid discrimination and violence because your skin is light, or because you're a gay person who doesn't match stereotypes and is somehow perceived as being straight. I'm not saying OP's life is necessarily super easy and they have no problems, but I do think they're over worrying about something and should maybe get some education outside of tumblr.

I am. I'm just not sure what the alternative is for asexuals unless they frequently talk about not wanting sex.

Just not dating a person of the same-sex gender?

Asexuals can still have romantic feelings either way?

Like this one claimed to?

So if they were in a romantic relationship with someone of the same-sex they'd still get discriminated?

Maybe not as much as sexual people because sexless gays are more acceptable, but still?

How what romantic feelings without sex sew hard to understand :(

What kind of freaks are you hanging out with that they'd somehow notice you not having sex?

For fucks sake, you are dense.

No, not dense - deliberately ignoring the part where op said they're biromantic so you can be an asshole all over this thread. So witty. Congrats.

We start screaming and fake disgusted gagging whenever people near us show sign of sexual attraction of any kind, didn't you know?

Oh no. You are asexual your life must be so hard. I know my friend and talk about how much sex we have like 24/7.

DA

Having your sexuality be constantly erased or told that you haven't found the right person can be pretty frustrating and depressing at times.

I feel you. That sucks.

Did you not read the post at all? I wasn't complaining that my life was hard because I'm asexual. What is your problem?

ugh. ugh ugh ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, you should not feel guilty at all. The idea of "passing as straight" is such complete bs and operates under the assumption that you can act in a way that isn't straight. Which... doesn't even make sense. Sexual orientation is based on attraction (or lack thereof, of course), not behavior, and to say or imply otherwise is totally backwards. People assuming you're straight has nothing to do with how you act or look or whatever, and everything to do with most of the world being heteronormative.

Don't let people get you down. And you're right, if you don't want to tell anyone, then you don't have to.

This. Unless you're putting active effort into it, that's not so much passing as being passed off- you aren't trying to make people think you're something that you aren't, people are just misreading you because of their own filters and stereotypes.
