Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Should I be watching it. I saved the pilot, but I haven't watched it yet, because I'm getting increasingly disinterested based on the promos alone. At first I was kind of interested in Alice and her kind of Return to Oz-y crazy town story, and she seems like she could be awesome but I'm just not sure I give a shit about her romance with a genie. In fact, I'm pretty sure I don't, and that seems to be the driving force of the series: rescuing her beloved.

And no, I'm not going to start liking the trope just because the genders were flipped.

From the first episode, it very much seems to be the story-driving trope, yes. I also couldn't decide if the CGI was pretty good for a TV series or incredibly bad by today's standards - they are quite good at fur, but the bluescreen scenes are painfully obvious and the architecture is just bad.

She's also unbelievably athletic, strong, agile and combat-savvy after having been locked up in a tiny room for a long time, but I guess it's wrong to expect realism from an Alice adaption.

But I kind of liked the Knave of Hearts, so I'll give it another chance for one or two episodes.

I did not like the first episode. All the CGI is distracting and I just plain don't like what they've done with any of the characters.

I liked Alice and the Knave but I'm wavering between going back because the CGI was so so so terrible and the villains weren't the best. They should rename the Red Queen the Pout Queen because that was all she did.

Is the Red Queen a younger Cora, or was Cora someone else? I can't really remember.

The Red Queen is a different character. Cora was the Queen of Hearts when she was OuaT but I'm not sure if she's turning up in Alice or not.

Technically the Red Queen is from Looking Glass (based on Chess) and Cora as the Queen of Hearts was Wonderland (based on Cards). It's irritating that people don't get the fact there were two books. OUAT and it's offspring are frustrating to the purist in my little bookish heart. Disney makes my head hurt if I consider their versions too long.

TBH, I'm still not sure about OUAT Wonderland and I'm still watching OUAT itself. I think I'm a masochist.

If you are someone who doesn't like to start a show that is going to be canceled before it is finished I would wait. The first ratings were seriously lacking so idk if it will even show all the eps that have been taped.

Oh, I'm in the same situation, actually! Saved it but haven't had any motivation to watch it because the promos do nothing for me. On one hand it has Michael Socha, and I ADORED him in Being Human, but...idk. Guess I'll see if you get anymore replies. :)

The "romance" is the blandest told-and-not-shown thing I have ever witnessed. The Knave of Hearts is the only decent actor (Naveen Andrews is chewing so much scenery he's going to have jaw muscles larger than his biceps in a few episodes) and he's not so much "watchable" as "doing the best he can with terrible dialogue." The CG may be the worst I have seen in a decade, and one of the major characters is entirely digital so it's not like you can pretend it's not there. It does not seem to mesh logically with the parent show at all. Despite being ostensibly from the same geographical area as Jafar (Naveen Andrews) and the genie from the parent show (Giancarlo Esposito), the good guy/love interest genie is a vaguely-ethnic-mostly-white-looking dude.

But other than that... No, actually other than that it's just boring.

Tbh I'm only watching this shit is for Naveen Andrews and Keith David.
