Contact Wearers!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-10-19 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I just started wearing contacts (as I have mentioned in previous posts) and it is going pretty good. Got putting them in down to 30 minutes and taking them out down to like 7.

But! I have a problem and I want to consult contact wearers before I spend money going to the eye doctor again. The contact in my left eye doesn't bother me at all, I never feel it.

But the one in my right eye....It isn't painful but it is more...irritating. It doesn't make my eye red or anything, but I am always aware it is in there. I -think- it might be that my right eye is drier (if I close my eyes for a bit it becomes less bothersome for a bit).

It also has some blurring in the bottom/side. That is the eye my astigmatism is on so it might be that...

Any advice?

What in the world makes it take 30 minutes to put in your contacts?

If it's blurring on you, you need to go back to the eye doctor to have it checked.

I just got them Tuesday and my body's natural instinct to not want my eyes to be jabbed? Those are two big reasons it takes 30 minutes. I am down from 90!

And it isn't blurry constantly, just sometimes (like if I stare too long or move my eyes to fast).

I'd talk to the eye doctor. The irritation plus the blurring on the bottom/side makes me think the contact isn't fitting right. Because honestly if you get a good pair you shouldn't be able to always feel it's there.

I know what you mean... I have never been able to forget I'm wearing contacts either, in either eye - and I have astigmatism in both, so that might in fact have something to do with it. Like you said, it doesn't hurt or anything, I can just feel "something is on my eye" all the time, which kind of makes me want to rub it, or just close my eyes and let the moisture build up.

Two things:

Are you wearing toric lenses? I think that's what they're called anyway - there are lenses specifically for people with astigmatism, that are sort of weighted or something so they will correct the astigmatism too, and if they start to rotate out of position, blinking puts them back in the proper orientation. I can't say they'd help with feeling the lenses, since it's what I wear and I still feel them, but it might be why you're getting blurriness.

Also, eyedrops! I guess there are some that you are absolutely not supposed to use when you're wearing contacts (or maybe just certain types of contacts), and some that you can. I asked my eye doctor when I started wearing them and mentioned having some dryness. I sort of got used to it over time and haven't bothered using them for ages, so I don't even remember what kind I was using... but since it might be dependent on the type of contact you're wearing, you'd probably want to ask the optometrist who gave you the contacts (or just call their front desk - I think it was actually the secretary who tipped me off about the eyedrops in my case).

I do not wear toric lenses! And I am going to buy a bottle of eyedrops tomorrow (or use my cleansing solution).

Ahhhh hahah. I can't use my cleansing solution, because I am extremely sensitive to chemicals and have to use this special stuff that has a special case which causes a chemical reaction to make the fluid bubble, and after 6-8 hours it's finished and stabilizes as saline. It's really cool, but also apparently REALLY not meant to go in the eyes until after the chemical reaction is finished. Warnings all over the box. It never occurred to me that most people actually can get their cleansing solution in their eyes...

Definitely talk to your doctor. I really think it's the astigmatism and it took me ages to get used to the feeling in the left eye (where my astigmatism is worse) also make sure you have different lenses. My left lens is thicker than my right because of the astigmatism.

For keeping your eyes wet, I used to just use the contact solution, not the SUPER clean stuff (where you only put one drop in at a time, but the stuff you rinse the contacts with)

Definitely go back to your doctor until you resolve the issue. Mine let me try samples of different contacts before I found a brand I like.

Thank you for the advice. I'll have to wait until Monday to call. Stupid doctors never working on the weekend. :|

I'm lucky and my eye doctor works on Saturday mornings. But at this point, one of my really good friends is an optician at Walmart so I just head over there with any issues and he helps me out. Usually it's fixing my broken glasses, but he can recommend stuff for my contacts too.

I have horrible astigmatism in both eyes, and I only 'feel' my contacts if I've got one in wrong (inside out).

Dry eye - get saline solution. It's cheap. You can get a giant bottle for around $2.00. Put it in a smaller bottle and use. Just remember to keep the saline solution in the fridge (big bottle), it'll keep fresh longer.

You're welcome!

I also started out wearing contacts when there weren't any made for astigmatism, and I did okay with them, but it really made a difference once I got my first Toric lenses.

Dude...how is it taking you that long? I don't mean to be rude but are you not holding your eye-lids or...?

Anyways, the contact wearer in my home* [she's had them for 30+ years] is saying go to the doctor. Something could be seriously wrong, and that they aren't supposed to hurt. If they are it's a bad sign, and it can be really bad - like, bad to the point your eyeballs could get ripped bad.

*I literally got mine today, so I can't speak from experience.

You know, this might sound kind of obvious and I don't mean to be patronizing, but might you be putting it in the wrong way?
