Most people I know consider a 10/1 hits/kudos ratio a very good sign, but you always have to take things like the size of the fandom and the general habits of the people in it (do people comment but not leave kudos, stuff like that) into account and adjust the ratio you're looking for accordingly. Also once a fic gets really popular and gets lots of hits obviously that ratio can't hold anymore.

Obviously this shouldn't be the only criteria for finding good fic to read because sometimes a fic will get kudos just because it's written by a popular author, and sometimes a fic the fandom at large doesn't get into will be the perfect fic for you. But it can be useful.

In my experience, the hits/kudos thing doesn't work in small/non-existent fandoms. Many folks just look at the works to find out what the hell this fandom is.

In bigger fandoms, it is more reliable, but genfic still gets less kudos per a fixed number of hits than slash/femslash.

So, anything from 0/infinity to 1/10.

The kudos thing also doesn't work if your story gets regularly re-read. The most popular story I ever wrote in any fandom had about a 1:8 kudos/hit ratio in the beginning, but now it's 1:22-ish. AO3 only lets you give a kudos once, after all.

Yeah, and WIPs are another whole different thing because of that.

I thought it only counted once per user?

Nope. Try it yourself.

fics with lots of chapters don't benefit from ratios either, since you can only leave kudos once :\

is this only when people are logged in to ao3 or something? because i'm pretty sure i've left more than one kudo to several multi-chaptered fics.

then again, i clear my browsers's cookies/cache often. maybe that does the trick.

Even if you're not logged in, you do need to clear your cookies/cache to be able to give kudos more than once on a fic, yes.
