That is a bit of a pickle, OP. But you know you don't actually have to play with people or talk to stranger in an MMORPG. Yeah people are there with you in the game, and you all can work together on an event or whatever, but it's not like you really have to speak up to participate.

And maybe if you bite the bullet and start playing you'll either get more comfortable chatting with strangers in-game. You never know.

I felt the same way too, OP. The Old Republic is my first venture into the world of MMORPGs, and personally speaking, the companion game mechanic is a godsend for someone like me (I have a fair bit of social anxiety, fwiw). It's not perfect, but it helps. Though I did recently join a friend's guild and have done a couple missions with them, and they were pretty enjoyable. But I always feel like a bundle of nerves afterward. D;

That said, I echo the above anon and just jump in and give it a try. Most MMORPGs are F2P these days (albeit with limited features), so even if you don't have a whole lot of features at your disposal, giving it a quick shot might be good. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, et all.

Oh man I love the companion part of SWTOR. And the cutscenes. It feels like you're actually in a story. The Star Wars universe has a lot of potential as a setting for an MMORPG - you get sick of "orcs, elves & humans" after a while.

The only thing that annoys me with SWTOR is the crafting.
And EA.

Yeah, I just started playing TOR as well, and the few group missions I did were fun, everyone was nice but it was really stressful. It would ruin my enjoyment of the game if I tried to play in a group all the time.

SWTOR is the only MMO I've ever gotten super far with. I thought it was just the Star Wars appeal, but I think it's the companion, because I can solo. I really have been harassed online too many times to want to group with strangers.

Guild Wars 2 (and to a lesser extent Rift) also have nice on-the-fly cooperative aspects.

(I have a guild on Rift that makes no demands; it's just there to have someone available to answer questions about the game anyone might have. Send me a PM if you want more details.)

Seconding GW2, though ime until I found a guild (whose site and forum I lurked a lot on to get a feeling for the general populace before I asked to join), I got a good amount of "join our guild!" messages, which ranged from polite to pushy and rude. Though making your own guild is also a viable option relatively early on to avoid that!

I've solo'd my way through most of the MMOs I've ever played. It's definitely possible.

I don't like interacting with others, and I can say that Star Wars: The Old Republic can be played without any interaction whatsoever.

...although how well you'll do greatly depends on your character class choice and your willingness to do micro-payments at tight spots, which will get more and more frequent as you reach higher levels.

Are you me?

Only I like MUDs, and unfortunately on a lot of them they usually have a small enough base of players that everyone usually interacts and talks with each other. Hard to enjoy soloing when you know everyone on the game thinks you're a massive bitch or weirdo for wanting to play alone and not talk to anyone.
