What? People do this on LJ?

Not so far as I'm aware. LJ's got this stupid 'facebook connect' and that caused uproar when it came out, but everyone I know disabled the feature and carried on just the same as before.

AFAIK, you can only repost your own stuff or your own comments on public posts. You can't use it to repost other people's posts or comments on locked posts.

Wow, actually, I stand corrected. There's a 'share' button on public posts you can use if the LJ user hasn't turned the option off. Grr!

Oh, wow... okay. I didn't connect mine with my Facebook. Do I still need to turn it off? I'm so glad at least all the stuff on my journal from back then is private.

I don't know if you'll see this, but you can turn off the share button completely. And the share button lets other people share your public posts - your private ones too if you haven't disabled it.

Go into your profile and hover your mouse over the word "profile" to get the drop down menu, then click "settings".

One of the first lines on that page is: "You can edit your account settings below. You may also want to edit your profile or your journal style".

Click on the link "journal style", then choose "customize your theme" (right half of the page, near the top).

There's a sub menu, on the left, on that page. Choose "entry text".

There's a line that says "Text to share this with a friend". Whatever text is in that box (mine said "share"), remove it and leave it blank, then save your changes.

That turned it off totally for me, including on my public posts.

Agh; I'm looking through my account settings trying to find where I can turn off the share button option, and I can't find it. The FAQ tells me how I can add a "repost button" to an entry, but I just want to make sure that my posts have no repost button, as the default.

Thanks - you're not spamming the entire thread, you're providing a valuable service! As it happens, that is exactly what the nice support volunteer at LJ told me, and I've done it.

Mind you, the way they phrased their information ("While there is no setting offered to turn off the Share button/link per se, you can adjust your display of this link so that it does not appear on your page. ") makes me think that someone reading you through your friends list (or news feed or whatever the hell they're calling it these days) will still be able to find a share button and share your post without you knowing it. The process you and the volunteer suggested may only remove it rom your actual site - and then only if someone reads your journal in your style, and doesn't read it in their own style (which may have the "share" option turned on.)

So "stupid LJ" still applies, at least provisionally. Sigh.

I did what you suggest, but found that it left a small blank space, and that if I clicked exactly in between Add to Memories and Track This, I could still use the link. :O
