Re: It is not society's job to raise your kids, people

You know, I don't think I'd appreciate an adult bringing that shit up in front of my kid, either. Check yourself, OP. You don't get to vent without appreciating who else is in the room.

I'm on the fence about this. I can understand a certain amount of 'checking' your volume etc when you're talking in public (ie you don't need to be shouting from the rooftops that you're talking about the latest disaster or the latest sexy novel or whatever), but I certainly don't think people should be allowed to tell strangers what they can and can't discuss in a public area.

I agree to an extent but there are standards within society about what topics and language we use in public. OP has a job that includes having customers within earshot of their workspace, so they should be mindful of that and conduct themselves professionally. I understand they didn't know the customer was in the area, but they should also look for customers before speaking.

Agreed, and that's definitely why I'm on the fence about it. In general and in public like I said, volume control should be key, and there's also an expectation of things (swearing, sex talk etc) that you keep to 'ears only' volume or just being aware of what type of people are around you and where you are.

At the same time, OP was at work, which to me brings out a whole different set of rules and expectations. While I wouldn't say, "You can't discuss problematic things ever!" at work, I would expect - like you said - that it's easy enough to glance around and make sure that what you're saying won't reach 'little ears' if it's a topic that should generally be adult only.
