Music Genres

[personal profile] shortysc22 2013-10-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always bounced from music genre to genre, depending on my mood and my current phase is country music, which has lost a lot of its twang these days.

For example, Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" was remixed with Nelly and Jason Aldean remixed "Dirt Road Anthem" with Ludacris. When I saw Chase Rice in concert a few weeks ago (he's a country singer who co-wrote Cruise), in the middle of his set, he played "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit and "Get Low" by Lil Jon.

Do you find that boundaries of the genres are mixed a lot more lately? Any crossover genre hits you really enjoy? Another example would be Luke Bryan playing "Enter Sandman" at his concert or Lacuna Coil's cover of "Enjoy the Silence"

Share your favorites and discuss!

I've... been listening to remixed swing music. It technically has it's own genre name, "electro swing". Been enjoying it but i've never been comfortable talking about my music tastes

Ooh thanks for the recommendations. I couldn't help but notice a lack of Caro Emerald, have you heard any of her songs?

Ohhh christables do I bounce around a whole hell of a lot. I listen to way too much new wave, which in turn has gotten me into retropop, but I also enjoy old-school 90s hip-hop and while I don't listen to it much anymore I still enjoy metal. I'll listen to almost anything, really, within reason.

But it's true, a lot of what I like best tends to be weird stuff. Like post-rock and metal (or all that plus goth rock), or post-rock+space ambience, or jazz ambient triphop, or just plain weird avante garde metal.

Hm. This turned into an impromptu music post.

Thanks for all the links. I love music even if I don't always comment on your threads.

There's definitely a lot of crossover with country and other genres... not just rap, but also rock and pop. There's an argument to be made, in fact, that a lot of popular songs that are released as country nowadays are essentially in the same lineage as popular mainstream rock, and probably would have been released as rock songs 20 or 30 years ago - but for whatever reason, mainstream rock kind of disappeared, and those things moved into country or pop. It's interesting. I think a lot of it has to do with demographics and fandoms - country still has a massive devoted fanbase that a lot of other genres don't, but it also has a lot of potential general popularity, and there's no other genre that can really say that.

As for me, I prefer the really old school country and the alt country stuff - I know that's kind of a cliched opinion to have, but it's still true. I don't hate the modern poppy stuff, it just usually doesn't interest me as a rule. In terms of what genres I listen to most, I also jump around a lot, but my natural home seems to be generally alternative/indie rock more than anything else. I seem to return to that.

Also "country" music still sells albums. Other than the mega artists, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Jay-Z, country artists top the charts and sill more physical albums than most other genres.

NYC music is a good example, the rock station vanished several years ago to become a pop station. Then an alt rock station came on and became a sports talk station. Just last year, after 17 years with no country station, one appears and it's super popular.

Another good look at the trends would be to take a look at The Voice and the winner. Juliet Simms, the runner up to Season 2, was in the bad Automatic Loveletter and sang a few songs with All Time Low. PRIOR to auditioning for The Voice! Season three's winner, Cassadee Pope (who I adore) was in a pop punk rock band Hey Monday prior to the Voice and went solo and has now released a country album. The Season 4 winner, Danielle, also released a country single.

Look at the American Idol winners who have been long lasting. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, they're all country artists (or so-called country, Kelly Clarkson has switched genres)

I love symphonic metal. Pure metal just makes my head hurt after a while, and straight-up orchestral stuff doesn't much do it for me cause I like vocals so much, but combined? Come to mama. Nightwish, Epica, and Kamelot are my favourites.

Nightwish's Oceanborn album was one of my favorite albums in high school. Any time I just need to relax I listen to that album

My mom calls my music taste 'eclectic', but I'm pretty sure the word for it is just 'special'. XD

I love everything from classic fifties and sixties music, to modern pop, to 'classical' music like Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban, to actual classic music like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, to whatever Within Temptation falls under, to JPop/JRock, to ABBA/Moody Blues, to Mike Oldfield, and musicals. I grew up with records of Mike Oldfield, Moody Blues, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc, and listening to the Sunday Night Oldies (and radio plays) because it meant being awake at like 11pm and I felt cool. XD

Just jumping on you right now to say MIKE OLDFIELD AHHHH!! because finding anyone who knows who he is besides 'he did Tubular Bells' is a rarity. You kinda made my day here.

What's your favourite album of his?

Haha, I know! "You know, he did Tubular Bells... from the Exorcist?" was my default when trying to remind people who he was. XD

Probably Five Miles Out, or Earth Moving I love pretty much every song off those two cds, though I like The Songs of Distant Earth too. :D

I really liked Songs of Distant Earth as well, actually. I'm really torn when playing favourites because I just can't decide between Ommadawn for its haunting melancholy or Discovery, which I love just about in its entirety.
