fic help: shoe lifts (gender related)

[personal profile] iwasanartist 2013-10-23 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Despite some other ideas that have been simmering, my muse really wants to expand the universe for my least popular fic, which features a gender-queer woman married to a cis man. I need her to seem taller when out with him as a man (apologies if you find my terminology objectionable) and was wondering if anyone had experience with shoe-lift inserts.

Can they be worn in conjunction with a slight heel on a dress shoe or boot? How much extra height can be expected before your feet just start to look ridiculous? And after awhile do they get as uncomfortable as a high woman's wedge?

(I posed this question somewhere else, and I swear to god somebody came back with "shoulder pads can make you look taller!" And that -- along with tucked in shirts and pants that fit -- is not really what I'm looking for.)

I have no experience with lifts, but I'm curious as to why the story needs the character to be taller when out as a man? (No judgement, just honestly curious.)

I suppose it's not necessary, but she's pretty short and he's average height, and I'd just like to even them out a little bit in a way that can provide more story instead of an author's note.

I've never worn them myself (I'm 5'11") but I used to crossplay with a number of women who did, and apparently the tallest ones are around 3" (beyond that they're too obvious) and the norm is about 2". The built-in ones can be quite comfortable, apparently, (though these are much more expensive) but the actual inserts (as a separate piece and not part of the shoe's design) can be uncomfortable and are especially hard to run in. They lift the heel primarily, putting as much pressure on the toes as, well, conventional heels do.

You can wear them in conjunction with any kind of shoe, really - at least my friends did. Doubling them up with a men's shoe or boot that already had a slight heel or thick sole for an extra boost was pretty common, but you can also put them in running shoes and the like.

Thanks a lot! This is really helpful information. :)

I have no experience with shoe lifts, but something else along similar lines:

Is s/he potentially punk/goth/alternative? Because there are plenty of giant platform boots that are actually comfortable. And having them be ridiculous is part of the point. I'm 5'0" myself, so I have several 2-3" platforms I'll wear out to clubs for dancing, and one awesome set of 8" platforms I wear to cons. For me, at least, any of them are much, much more comfortable than anything with a heel/wedge.
