Especially tumblr! You are setting yoruself up to be poisioned because you can't unsee. Enjoy the shows raw! If you must dip your toes, Fanart only, don't read the comments!

I woulnd't be surprised if your online environment helped your perception so getting out would probably make you happier with works in general.

This is the best advice. You can still be a fan without being in fandom.

Depending on far down the rabbit hole they've traveled it may be too late. Sometimes I'm watching something completely new and I'm like "oh that thing right there is textbook problematic". I don't need fandom to point it out to me, because the viewpoints/'how to spot problematic things' carries over from canon to canon. (Luckily for me, I don't really care in most instances.)

So even if they do watch something raw, the 'problematic' angel/devil on their shoulder might end up interjecting anyway.

That's sad. "Spotting problematic things" isn't a game. If caring doesn't go into the critical thinking, it doesn't really matter that you can "spot it".

I'm not equating caring with rage-quitting every piece of media ever created, for the record.

I do care about some things, especially blatant things in current works. Don't get me started on Moffat's portrayal of women. Just don't.

However I just don't see the point in getting all worked up about a sexist line here or an off-color portrayal of a disabled character there in things made 20-30 years ago. Like I make note of it, catalog it, but the thing I'm watching isn't exactly in public conscious anymore. And that doesn't even begin to take into consideration the external factors.

Like first season of the new Doctor Who, the companion Rose has a line saying "That's so gay."

1) It's one line.
2) It's from something that's over 8 years old now.
3) The writer who wrote it is gay himself.

So what am I supposed to do? Think 'OMG that line was so wrong' every time I watch it? Accuse RTD of 'internalized homophobia'? The critical thinking is there I guess, but without some end goal/cause to drive it to, it sort of drifts slowly to the ground and poofs into dust.

God I didn't remember that :/ I would have been pissed, I can fucking criticise RTD if I want, and I do.

Out of curiosity, you say you would've been pissed. Does that mean you aren't pissed right now and - if so - is that because of the amount of time that's passed since the line's conception and now?

It's been aaaaages since I watched anything with RTD & Rose. RTD's moved on now. I wasn't even in the fandom when I was watching RTD/Rose. I don't have the energy to give a fuck now, except to make a frowny face.

This is the only way I can enjoy Legend of Korra anynore, the fandom is just such a fucking shitstorm every day of the week.
