Your life must be miserable. And I don't even mean that sarcastically. I can't imagine how awful it must be not to be able to love things.

Is there anything at all you do enjoy?

If there is, do you hide it away from tumblr so they can't figure out some way to be offended at it?

work at it

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an acquired skill. You actually have to work at the balancing act. I have the same problem and still struggle with it. I'm pretty good these days with acknowledging the issues and still being able to enjoy the whatever, but every now and then I just can't. So I understand where you're coming from.

The obverse is also true: It's okay to NOT like things that are problematic.

It's also okay to take a cold, hard look at something that Tumblr thinks is "problematic" and decide that they're full of shit.

I wonder if the OP pushes people away when they find out the person isn't perfect. I also wonder what flaws the OP has, you know, aside from being highly judgmental.

Create!

[personal profile] feotakahari 2013-10-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
When something I've read pisses me off, I write a version of it I like. I've written my own little rebuttals to everything from "Petaybee" to "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". (Granted, my response to the former turned out to be complete crap, but at least I tried.) Even if you're not a good writer, I think at least trying to create a response can be a useful exercise for venting your frustrations. (And sometimes, dealing with issues the original work swept under the rug can actually make it possible for you to enjoy the original work again!)

For me it depends on what exactly is problematic about a certain thing that I am consuming. I have things that will without a doubt make me abandon a show/book/etc while others it would depend on the handling of the issue.

As someone else said though, it IS okay to not like things. Though I don't think there are many things you can possibly consume with your aversion to problematic stuff, 'cause really, pretty much everything is problematic in one way or another.

Especially tumblr! You are setting yoruself up to be poisioned because you can't unsee. Enjoy the shows raw! If you must dip your toes, Fanart only, don't read the comments!

I woulnd't be surprised if your online environment helped your perception so getting out would probably make you happier with works in general.

It's all about balance and not letting things get to you even though you recognize the flaws. (The balance is what you can take and what you refuse to take. You are completely out of balance in that you can't take anything.)

And... work at it? I don't know what to say, man.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree with the comment that said this is something you'll have to (and should) work at. It's good to be aware of things that are problematic and to understand why, but if it's spoiling your enjoyment of everything... well, that means you've lost your sense of perspective.

Fandoms are like everything else in real life. You have to figure out what things are things you dislike but can put up with, and what things are 100% deal-killers. Not everything in life (or fandom) is going to be ideal, but cutting yourself off from it altogether isn't a practical solution.

You need to take an internet break. In the real world, people don't freak out over every little thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're not enjoying it then you're not enjoying it. You shouldn't have to force yourself to like something that continues to bother you. However, I would look into why it bothers you to the point of not being able to enjoy much of anything.

Once again Tumblr strikes a deathblow to a fan.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
that sucks OP. because i legitimately cannot think of one thing i would have left to fangril if i couldn't tolerate SOME problematic elements.

but i suppose that serves to highlight how crap the media we get is/how much work still needs to be done.

Are you me??

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Like seriously, I feel the same way, about those same fandoms. But I also feel kinda better about it, you know? I don't need tumblr to tell me supernatural is really shitty about women or that bbc Sherlock is shitty about queer issues, I have eyes and critical reasoning skills.

I think my sister is like that. She has maybe 2/3 fandoms left and is slowly running out of things she likes.

Idk, more power to you, I guess, but I just can't do that. I think it's great to be able to like problematic stuff, still go "really?" about it, and then celebrate when things get it right.

I'm like that, but the other way around. Oh, there's a female character who isn't just there for decoration? There's a non-heterosexual character who doesn't get killed or angst all day? There's a character of color who isn't made of stereotypes from their country of origin? Even if everything else sucks, I will love that thing, whatever it is, and refuse to listen to anyone who doesn't like it.

You said "problematic" but then later on said "something you don't like". Just because you don't like it doesn't me it's "problematic" (in a social justice sense, as I'm assuming you're using it).

Also, just because you like something doesn't mean it isn't "problematic" to somebody else in some way.

People can find "problematic" elements in EVERYTHING if they look hard enough. Somebody, somewhere will find something offensive about whatever. That's because people are different.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Or, if you are on tumblr, stay there and enjoy it like the rest of us. You don't have to like something just because (general) you CAN like something that's problematic. Sometimes some problematic things are harder to swallow than others, like rape apologia vs. subtle misogyny or something.

The "you're allowed to like problematic things" is a guide for teaching people how to recognize the very real, problematic flaws in some media while still being able to enjoy other aspects of it, and in turn teach others those same flaws and hopefully eventually encourage the people generating that media to reconsider making stuff like that without positioning those problems AS problems.

Unless you've always been like this, which I'm guessing you haven't, it's probably a symptom of something else. Maybe the development of your critical lens is at a stage where you're only just realizing how racist (or whatever) you've been and are afraid that liking something with racist (or whatever) elements will hold you back? Maybe you're anxious about the idea of possibly having to defend the things you like, and that's making you reluctant to like anything at all? Now might be a good time for some self-reflection to figure out what this is really about.

is there any show on earth that you can actually watch then?

I was going to say "well, at least there's my little pony" but then I remembered the wank about the buffalos, so I guess that's out

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Every piece of media you've ever consumed is problematic. But you can't spend your whole life clutching your pearls over everything that ever crosses your path. At some point you have to come to terms with the fact that a) most people are genuinely trying to be good people b) no one is perfect, and even the most progressive people in the world have prejudices.

I spent about six months seeing bigotry everywhere, and for a little while it did kill my enjoyment of things. But I snapped out of it pretty quick when I decided that it's bullshit to let that kind of thing ruin your life. I'd much rather buy a game written by a guy who's trying to write awesome women characters, than not buy a game by him just because he kind of failed with one of them.

For me it's the author's views. I can enjoy their work, but the moment I find out they have a view I just cannot respect ("if we let the gays marry, next thing you know people will be marrying their pets!", "fanfiction is the moral equivalent of child rape!" etc.) it just poisons everything they create for me, to the point where I no longer enjoy any of it, no matter how well-crafted.

So I tend to avoid author blogs and interviews like the plague. Sometimes it's unavoidable, though, and thanks to some of Moffat's comments on women, I didn't really care for Sherlock, and doubt I'll ever watch Doctor Who.
