I agree the tagging needs to be sorted out. Not sure what they would be called? Ephebophilia and straight up SPECIAL CIRCLE OF HELL underage?

(Also a tag for underage/underage would be nice too. :/)

Underage-Adolescent
Underage-Child or Underage-Prepubescent?

Oh yeah that could work!

Um, I don't think that would work.

The CDC and the WHO define adolescent as 10-19. Puberty can begin very young for some. How about Underage-Teenager and Underage-Child?

I'd love to see the reactions to 'underage' being split up into 'ephebophilia' and 'pedophilia', and all the authors who's works fall underneath the latter.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I could get behind that.

I would bet there would be wails of "Yes, technically that is exactly what it is but... kink-shaming!"

The meltdown would be epic.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But if it's two children or two teenagers is it still ephebophilia or pedophilia? I thought that was just with an adult with an underage person.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-25 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that could just be left under underage, and then just have ephebophilia and pedophilia?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're an adult (or near-adult) writing about two kids having sex then sry2say that's still pedophilia as far as I'm concerned.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between nostalgic writing about something most people have experienced (i.e. first times and childhood exploration) and writing about an adult preying on a child.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wouldn't classify writing about kids in sexual situations as "nostalgic". First times with characters who are just skating the underage line (so 15, 16, 17, depending on where you are), sure, I don't have a problem with that. But no one will convince me someone's writing about two kids having sex for ~nostalgia~.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... in retrospect I did not mean to defend gratuitous and oversexualized sex scenes featuring children.

This. And even taking into account the argument of "what if the person who wrote it is underage," AO3 and other sites' policies is that you have to be at least 13 to join and 18+ to read explicit stuff (don't know if same 18+ requirements are there to post).

So yeah. Maybe some minor grey areas regarding ephebophilia, but the pedophilia is still dead out.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That would be a glorious meltdown.

Postpubescent/Prepubescent? Kinda long though.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A tag?

You make your own tags on AO3, so just type it in?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between an archive tag and an author tag. Just because an author tags something doesn't mean the archive co-opts it and files other applicable stories under that for mainstream searching.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So figure out what tag you want, use it, and get yourself two other people to use it to. Then it's a canon tag.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
FYI, even fandom tags like characters and pairings are author tags. AO3 does not apply ANYTHING to a work that the uploader didn't include. If more than one person or work has the same tag, regardless of what it is, it's archived for searching.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK all that much but aren't there archive tags authors can choose from "underage" being one?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, authors can check boxes for warning categories, relationship types, etc but those aren't tags and are handled differently on both front and back end. I think you're talking about including an underage warning that specifies age ranges? Because there is already a tag for underage/underage, it's just a matter if authors choose to use it or not. As a former AO3 staff member, I think more people would use the archive warning (check box) than currently use the tag just because it would be visible.

But changing the current warnings is a slippery slope so it isn't going to happen. It's up to the authors to tag their works, not AO3 to police them. That's why AO3 always has and still encourages people to tag their works with all applicable tags about characters, relationships, and content. If they don't, readers are limited to finding or filtering out the content they do or do not want to view.

re: underage/underage

I mentioned waaaay downthread that one of the dinosaurs of internet erotica, the Kristen Archive, used to combine its gender-pairing tags with capitalization to indicate which parties were underage--for example, F/F would be two adult women, f/f would be two underage girls, and F/f would be one adult woman and one underage. This combined with their tags for "ped" and "extreme ped" to give you a very good idea within the first five seconds of what the ages, genders, and power dynamics involved would be. Unfortunately, AO3's (gen/het/slash/multi) indicator system doesn't mesh well with that, although I suppose people could just start tagging with the content I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I stop by there sometimes when Ao3 is giving me no joy and I just want wank material, and it still uses that labeling system.
