I agree the tagging needs to be sorted out. Not sure what they would be called? Ephebophilia and straight up SPECIAL CIRCLE OF HELL underage?

(Also a tag for underage/underage would be nice too. :/)

I'd love to see the reactions to 'underage' being split up into 'ephebophilia' and 'pedophilia', and all the authors who's works fall underneath the latter.

re: underage/underage

I mentioned waaaay downthread that one of the dinosaurs of internet erotica, the Kristen Archive, used to combine its gender-pairing tags with capitalization to indicate which parties were underage--for example, F/F would be two adult women, f/f would be two underage girls, and F/f would be one adult woman and one underage. This combined with their tags for "ped" and "extreme ped" to give you a very good idea within the first five seconds of what the ages, genders, and power dynamics involved would be. Unfortunately, AO3's (gen/het/slash/multi) indicator system doesn't mesh well with that, although I suppose people could just start tagging with the content I guess.

That'd be really nice. I know SPN Kinkmeme started tagging Underage and Underage Extreme, but I have no idea what the difference is because the SPN Kinkmeme is a horrible, horrible place.

Agreed. Am thankful I've not stumbled on any of the latter at any point, I don't think my current fandoms really inspire that kind of content but.. yeah. The differentiation would be very good to have.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I got so annoyed when I wanted to upload a fic of mine where two 15-year-olds experiment with sex for the first time (and which I wrote when I was 17), and the only tagging options were "in with all the seriously illegal and immoral shit" or "choose not to warn with all that entails".

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree. I'm in Teen Wolf fandom and most of the characters qualify for the 'underage' tag, so I've got a bad habit of ignoring the tag now. Which means occasionally I will stumble on a fic with super underage actual kids having sex and it is always the worst kind of 'surprise'.

I don't mind if people want to write that, I just wish there as a better tagging system so I could avoid it forever.

I'm in that fandom too and I'm wondering what fics you've come across where the characters are super underage and having sex? Because I've never come across anything like that and I read a shit ton of fic.

Anyway, agreed that there needs to be better tagging.

I'd hope they tag it'pedophilia' instead of """Underage Extreme""". Because, hate to break this to people, but that's what older character/pre-pubescent character IS, and if you're gonna read that stuff you could at least own up to it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
But why do you assume it's always older character/pre-pubescent character? Sometimes people are writing about two kids "exploring their sexuality" or wtfever. Still not something I want to read about for a variety of reasons, but not it's not the same as pedophilia I don't think.

Or you could just not read the FICTION that is tagged as underage because the authors who created the fictional situations have no way to know what your personal threshold for underage is.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe there is a vast difference between a 19-year-old getting it on with a 16-year-old and a 30-year-old getting it on with a 10-year-old REGARDLESS of what someone's personal threshold for underage is.

I sometimes go to the Kristen Archives (yeah, I know, but there's some good stuff in the sci-fi section.) Anything at all that has sexual activity by a character under 18 is tagged "ped." Anything that has sexual activity by a character under 13 is tagged "extreme-ped." It's only on sites like AO3 that people argue things like "it's technically ebebophilia, not pedophilia."

"Can you make a tag that fits perfectly with my fandom, my fic, this stuff I'm thinking?"

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of talk about using ephebophilia/pedophilia for tagging, but here are my two cents.

To be totally 100% honest, I think we should reserve the term pedophilia for the shitstains who want to fuck actual, flesh and blood children.

Considering all the weird things people get off to in the realm of fiction (eating people, screwing animals, moeblobs with eyes bigger than half of their face) and simply how popular extreme underage/loli/shota/whathaveyou content really is, in contrast with how rare legitimate pedophilia is in real life, (most child molesters aren't actually pedophiles, they just target the most vulnerable group) I think it's fair to say that most writers of that sort of content aren't actual pedophiles.

The obvious question is, then what could they possibly get out of writing it? Not my kink, so I couldn't precisely tell you. But I am pretty heavily involved with BDSM and know quite a few people into roleplaying extreme power dynamics; teacher/student, parent/child, master/dog, etc.

Full disclosure, I'm a masochist. I get off on guro/extreme torture fiction. There is no fucking way I would ever consider letting someone rip out my own eyes in real life. The concept of that in real life repulses me; it only turns my crank when it's fake. I can't imagine I'm some special snowflake.

I'm in favor of underage/extreme underage for tagging, as well as calming the fuck down regarding extreme content in general. People NEED to tag their stuff properly, but at the same time liking weird/disgusting fiction doesn't mean you're a piece of shit, as long as you only like the fake stuff.

Wow, I did not intend for this to be so long.

Ugh, that tag. I had to use it once because the characters in question were seventeen (one explicitly described as 'seventeen and a half', another whose age wasn't stated but who was a classmate). I used the tag because, yes, they were under eighteen, but... shit, one character was SIX MONTHS OFF. They were a year and a half past the age of consent in my state.

It's very goddamn different if you're writing smut involving someone who's a tiny handful of months away from being eighteen with someone the same age, and someone writing smut about, I don't know, a twelve-year-old.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you in the sense that I think the US idea of "underage" is fucked up to begin with; it does not make anyone a pedophile to think of teens after puberty as desirable (although of course it may, depending on their own age, make them fucking creeps who deserve scathing moral judgment and perhaps more depending on the circumstances).

But what I am a little baffled at is the idea that AO3 contains pornography dealing with prepubescent children to a degree where this differentiation matters.

(Granted, my experience is naturally limited to my own fandoms and such, but I have never once glimpsed any such thing -- only the "usual" stuff featuring people under the arbitrary age of consent in the US...but easily above in many, many other jurisdictions including mine).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They would have to include Stephen King and that disgusting pre-teen one girl/six boys g***b*** in It, then. Which might be a good thing so everyone knows what kind of revolting fantasies lurk in that man's head.
