There's a lot of talk about using ephebophilia/pedophilia for tagging, but here are my two cents.

To be totally 100% honest, I think we should reserve the term pedophilia for the shitstains who want to fuck actual, flesh and blood children.

Considering all the weird things people get off to in the realm of fiction (eating people, screwing animals, moeblobs with eyes bigger than half of their face) and simply how popular extreme underage/loli/shota/whathaveyou content really is, in contrast with how rare legitimate pedophilia is in real life, (most child molesters aren't actually pedophiles, they just target the most vulnerable group) I think it's fair to say that most writers of that sort of content aren't actual pedophiles.

The obvious question is, then what could they possibly get out of writing it? Not my kink, so I couldn't precisely tell you. But I am pretty heavily involved with BDSM and know quite a few people into roleplaying extreme power dynamics; teacher/student, parent/child, master/dog, etc.

Full disclosure, I'm a masochist. I get off on guro/extreme torture fiction. There is no fucking way I would ever consider letting someone rip out my own eyes in real life. The concept of that in real life repulses me; it only turns my crank when it's fake. I can't imagine I'm some special snowflake.

I'm in favor of underage/extreme underage for tagging, as well as calming the fuck down regarding extreme content in general. People NEED to tag their stuff properly, but at the same time liking weird/disgusting fiction doesn't mean you're a piece of shit, as long as you only like the fake stuff.

I don't care if the writer wants to fuck kids IRL or not. If you're writing a fic in which an adult is having sex with a child, then your fic is depicting pedophilia and should be tagged as such.

Disclaimer, I come from a (Western, highly developed country) with a low, low age of consent, and many of these discussions are completely nonsensical to me.

This. It's especially ridiculous considering that most "underage" fic I've seen (at least in my fandoms) is with two teenagers in the 15-17 age range so it wouldn't even be pedophilia anyway.

Add in the fact that the age of consent differs in different places (it's 16 where I'm from and I know of a lot of other countries where it's also 16) and things just get muddy. In my country, two 17-year-olds fucking would be perfectly legal and not considered underage at all.

... That's exactly the basis of this entire argument. That there should be separate tags for these things so that high school teens getting it on wouldn't get thrown under the same label as actual pedo stuff.

Is the latter really even that common, though? I can't think of a single example that I've encountered on AO3 from any of my fandoms, even the ones with questionable stuff in canon itself.

Not into SPN, but I am in some anime fandoms. I don't think any of my fandoms even have characters under the age of 13 or so unless you're counting childhood flashbacks and the only kidfic I've seen has been completely G-rated.

Like the other anon mentioned, some fandoms age their characters up and down to get more extreme underage situations. SPN is one of those fandoms, although you can avoid most of it if you avoid the kinkmeme.

For anime fandoms, I usually stick to anime that stars older characters myself (Tiger and Bunny, for example) but I also like things like Hunter x Hunter. Unfortunately, Hunter x Hunter has a psychotic adult character who is canonically attracted to the (then 12 years old) protagonist. It goes exactly the direction you might think.

Every big fandom I've been in lately, at least a couple of adult/child fics pop up every week, often with bonus incest (ie dad/son, etc). Not because of their canon ages, people just age them up/down.

The Inuyasha fandom has A LOT of Sesshoumaru/Rin fic in which Rin is still 8 years old. Granted, I don't like that pairing anyway now because of the uneven power dynamics, but when I was first getting into fanfiction and trying the pairing on for size, I accidentally came across a few of these pedophilic fics.
