It's a shame, because I've loved lots of Gainax productions in the past (I still watch FLCL at least once a year) and there's so much about Kill la Kill that appeals to me (kickass ladies! superextreme battles! tons of sight gags!)

And I even like fanservice in a lot of places. I like boobs as much as the next lesbian, fgs.

But the overt sexualization of a character who does not want to be sexualized is really gross to be. If it were like Bayonetta or Panty & Stocking, where it's within the characters' personality to pose sexily and show some skin, it would be fine. But depicting scenes where a girl who doesn't want to be exposed is forced to dress in a really skimpy outfit and have everyone leer at her, and then to say that she should accept this if she wants to be powerful? That's upsetting to me, and makes me stop enjoying the show.

I disagree that it's the nature of the genre. I've seen other stuff that Trigger and Gainax have done. They could be better.

Nooooo but don't you understand, she just needed to EMBRACE her inner exhibitionist?!!

Yeah, I'm pretty grossed out by it too. :/

The show is about clothing; the nudity and the embarassment are part of the theme and the story doesn't work without them. This is pretty much what the narrative in Kill la Kill is going for: http://sushiobunny.tumblr.com/post/64589948299/just-to-make-my-own-opinion-clear-kill-la-kill

Even the title refers to the clothing idea; kiru means "being dressed".
