Yeah but people "hate" female characters far more than they hate male ones.

Really dude? You might see a show where a male and a female are hated by the same amount of people but check into WHY they're hated. A man might be hated because he's cruel, he's vicious, he's evil, he's manipulative, etc. A female character is hated... because "she's a slut, whore, bitch, cunt, ugly, fat, skank, annoying, useless, whiny, cries too much, puts out too much, puts out with the wrong people"... sometimes it's not about hate it's about WHY they're hated. And female characters are hated for some really stupid and unfair reasons, reasons that are celebrated in a male character. If a female character is hated for those things I listed for the male (cruel, evil, manipulative) THAT makes more sense and is fine. It means the writing is giving her actual characterization. But usually it's just... she's female in the "wrong" ways and fans hate her for it.

Yup, I get that. It's wrong. That's why I said what I did. It makes the people saying we shouldn't like that woman character because she's a bad person look stupid.

Edit to say that if you want to hate a bad character I don't think that's wrong either. I mean, that lady is seriously fucked up and deserving of hate.

TRUTH.

So much truth.

A fictional example (to go with the historical example in the OP) is Mad Men. Don Draper--the serial cheater who gaslighted his wife, the negligent parent who pawns his kids off to any remotely maternal figure nearby, the fraud, the fascinating but extremely flawed main character has crazy amount of fans. His ex-wife Betty? Is absolutely slammed. Slammed for all the same things for which Don gets a pass, *especially* parenthood. Betty us certainly flawed but at least she's THERE. Don has abandoned his family on several occasions. I pretty much detest most Mad Men fans.
