Passing out candy and gleefully turning away teens.

Aw, give teens a chance. If they really worked on their costume toss them a candy as a, "Hey, A for effort."

I have a full face-obscuring hood (I think I got it for being the Ghost of Xmas Future...) and I'm always tempted to bind my chest and go run around the neighborhood trick-or-treating. My height's a little suspicious but I've been this tall since I was 12-13.

There's an age limit to trick or treating now? I totally still went when I was in high school.

If you are a teen and barely in a costume (cat ears are not a costume), you are being turned away. I got little kids to hype up on sugar.

That sounds fair enough, but will you give them candy if they're chaperoning? It's hard work to herd around sugar-high kids.

That is... really stupid. They are there, trying to have fun, and you're being that horrible person.

I have a limited amount of candy. Therefore, I am going to save it for the little kids instead of the teenagers (who are not even in costumes). Sorry.

DA. I hear ya - if you're out trolling for candy, put in a little effort. One of my coworkers used to make the teens (if they weren't wearing a costume) do a trick or something to earn their treat. A trick as in, magic trick, handstand, whatever.

My brothers, the kids, and assorted friends all dress up (my brothers have awesome Ren-faire pirate costumes, the assorted friends generally have Ren-faire quality stuff, too) and then herd the kids door to door.

My brothers go as 'drunk semi-Scottish pirates' and shout things like 'Arrgh! It's a wee ghostie!' at random kids and hand out 'pirate booty' (gold-foil wrapped chocolate coins).

Of course, their mugs are full of grog, so it gets a little wild, but not stupid. I've gone as a one of the pirate crew a few times and it's a blast.

Shit, son, if you're going out trick-or-treating, you'd better be in costume. I went trick-or-treating as a teenager and my costumes only got more elaborate as I got older.

Did you end up turning anyone away?

WE ONLY GOT FOUR TRICK OR TREATERS! It was so disappointing. I would occasionally stand by the door, look out, and frown in disappointment.

We get groups of teens (not in costume) who try and get candy.

Oh that's stupid as fuck. At least the teens here try really hard with their costumes.

I thought you were like a teacher I had in high school. She would give out candy until she found her first teen (always in costume), would tell them they were too old to trick-or-treat, and closed the door in their face. Then she would turn off the lights and not give out candy for the rest of the night. She was astounded when our whole class said we trick-or-treated and told her she was mean for doing that to the kid.

But you don't do that and the kids aren't even dressing up so nevermind.

No, when teens come up wearing normal clothes we tell them, "We are saving candy for the kids." Last year some drunk girl whined at us for about 5 minutes because we would not give her candy. I gotta prioritize my candy, I ain't got an unlimited amount.

Ah. We've never gotten that at my house. That's got to be annoying.

We are a small town, I expect they don't have much else to do. We did have some come up last year towards the last 15 minutes or so of trick-r-treating. They were very polite and we ended up giving them candy because the night was almost over.

We have the same problem; add it to the fact that we live in a rough area with a high level of teen gang activity, and it all makes you pretty reluctant to open your door to rough-looking teens who are basically begging.

Re: What are doing on this fine Hallow's Eve?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-01 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
SA

It's different if they're with kids or they've at least made the effort of an actual costume, but we've been getting fewer and fewer of the neighbourhood kids - who are adorable - and more of these types: they basically see an opportunity for free stuff (and I've heard them say that), grab selfish amounts of sweets, then look shifty on your doorstep, trying to get a look into your house to see if you've got anything worth stealing. Really not fun.

That is very sweet but maybe if these teens actually made an effort to dress poorly as anything, I'd give them something towards the end of the night. But at 6pm I am saving candy for the kids that will be coming through.

Same - though, to be fair, the teens we're turning away are the ones who've egged our [and other people's] cars, and burned our recycling bin because we ~dared~ to move a jacket they'd left on our lawn after waiting for days for them to come get it.

[They also have, apparently, been known to use our lawn/driveway as a place to have fights...but considering we've never seen it, and the source is a bit...questionable, I'm not really sure I believe that one.]
