Yeah I have no idea really either. I mostly just scan Tumblr and for fic on ao3. But I can't figure out where to actually get involved. :\

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You get involved by doing anything that is not lurking. Really, that's all.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

But if you don't draw or write and all you can contribute are opinions, where do you go for discussion?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinkmemes or anonmemes, or comment on fanworks. Themed tumblrs also work.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But those are not very active and hard to find.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That depends on the fandom and some general ones (like fail_fandomanon) are extremely active.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You've probably already figured this out, but just opinions aren't worth much. If you don't want to try secret communities/anonmemes/kinkmemes/promptmemes, throwing your opinion out there will get you exactly nothing. Learn to produce something if you want people to give you attention.

(Not OP)

Dammit, all I want from others is opinions. All I want to give is my opinions. Long intricate satisfying analysis. I spent many happy years on TWOP, discussion boards and LJ doing just that, except the new fandoms are not on there. I don't want bloody fic and fanart, it's not my thing.

Fandom is changing. Opinions used to be worth something :'(

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
And I think that's what the OP is trying to say.

I don't mind fanfic in moderation, I like it, but... I like it with a nice balance. And I want fic that's almost analytical of the canon, not basically an AU that ignores the last book/season and has ships that would never happen. What ifs, missing moments, that sort of thing.

But... that's kind of harder to find nowadays. It's there, though, you've just gotta look for it. It's still at TWOP, but TWOP's incredibly unfriendly these days.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
But... isn't an AU that ignores the last book/season a "what if" or I'm missing something?

The best times I've ever had in online fandom have been having discussions that consisted entirely of opinions, interpretations, and ideas in communities where people rarely, if ever, posted fic or art. Fic and art are nice, but they're not a social experience the way discussions are.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what people keep saying, but every time I comment or post opinions or art or fic it's like talking into a void. I can't seem to actually get any interaction.

It's not nearly as simple as you'd like to make out.

[personal profile] gamma_orionis 2013-11-02 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to start out like that. Once you do it for a little while, people start to take notice. The more you do it, the more notice they take.

It really is that simple. We all started by talking into voids.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)

No, some people just don't catch on. Most of fandom is huge and no matter how often you post or how much you tag or link sometimes not everyone gets paid attention to.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Same experience here. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, we all did not start by talking into voids. Back when I started in fandom (eight or so years ago), I had lots of comms to choose from. Fic comms, pairing-specific comms, more general show-based comms. When you commented there, everyone could see your comment and respond if they wished.

On Tumblr, all I ever see is endless re-blogging.

I think Tumblr has created this "talk endlessly into a void and hope something sticks" mentality where previously fandom was about precise targeting in conversation. That's actually why I see myself as mostly a lurker in fandom today - outside of F!S. I have neither the time nor the patience to talk endlessly at an empty void and hope someone hears me.

OH GOD THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE OF TUMBLR

What the hell, fandom? Where the fuck is the meta?

Yeah, posting on a LJ comm was not like posting into the tumblr void.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Creating my own blog and trying to gather up lots of followers is an awful lot of work just to get a little back-and-forth discussion now and then. Forums and comms don't function that way. They are communities built for groups people with common interests rather than the tumblr/twitter format of following individual people in hopes they say something interesting about that one show you like.

Some people answer comments, some don't.

You can stop leaving comments to the people who don't and searching for the one who do so.

But honestly, if you want a conversation, leaving opinions on a Fic/Art may not be the best way since you can end receiving a simple "Thank you".
It's easier on anon memes and such, where people go specifically to talk.

It's kind of counterintuitive to go somewhere to 'meet' people where most posters are anon -- right?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
But many anon memes are ok with people using their account and even when they don't, it's not rare for to people to enjoy talking with another anon for so long that they end exchanging usernames to keep in touch unanonymously.

Also, both the previous anon and the OP are just talking about participating in fandom and interacting with people and that it's perfectly possible as anon. That even may help if they have anxiety issues (I know it helps me and if I couldn't participate anonymously anywhere I would be a full time lurker and would never EVER exchange a word with someone here or in any other fandom space)

I find it helps to look for other people who are in a similar situation (new to the fandom, lacking followers and/or being ignored) and engaging with them. Sometimes you have to send a reply to start a discussion, rather than waiting around. It's not surefire but it works okay.
