I believe in being yourself and to hell if people don't like it because it's not "normal". You're not hurting anyone by publicly being a fan of things.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)I think there's a definite way to be yourself and also following social/public etiquette, and a lot of fans have no idea how to behave in public. You can be a public fan of something and talk passionately about it while still maintaining normal social cues and interactions.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)I don't think we're having the same conversation. Original anon said about observing social norms, which I took to meaning basic rules of social interaction. You said that you didn't care about that and that people should be themselves, which I took to understand you don't believe there are proper or improper ways to behave in public, just that you should be yourself.
But then you said being obnoxious is a bad thing, which is pretty much what OP is saying so I'm just really confused.

I definitely get the impression that that meant "acknowledge that your hobbies are weird and don't expose people to them because they think you are weird". Like, "acknowledge that your hobbies are fringe"? Maybe it's just me but "fringe" has some pretty strong implications. "Fringe" implies the SPN tinhatters who believe Jensen and Ackles (sp?) are soul mates, or soulbonders, or the Snape wives, or someone else to that extreme, often unhealthy caliber. Ordinary nerdiness is actually pretty common, and I'm not going to act like my hobbies are weird or offensive when they're not.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)This exactly. It's how to weave your fannishness into your overall narrative without coming off like a bad stereotype / someone to be ridiculed.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)So yes, you can be an excited fan, but there is a time and place for it.

I feel like that's a given and it definitely isn't the sort of thing I was talking about.
Those girls sound really, really annoying. Did they get kicked out?
