I worry about this sort of thing all the time. I'm pretty "in the closet" as far as fandom goes, and if I ever met extremely vocal fans IRL I'd probably be embarrassed on their behalf / want to GTFO ASAP.

I'm definitely a shitty person who thinks there's a "right way" to be a fan (namely: please observe the social norms of the majority whenever possible, and acknowledge that your interests are fringe. Tin Hats need not apply)

It's why Aja's stuff on the Daily Dot gets my most powerful side-eye.

yeah we would not get along.

I believe in being yourself and to hell if people don't like it because it's not "normal". You're not hurting anyone by publicly being a fan of things.

DA

I think there's a definite way to be yourself and also following social/public etiquette, and a lot of fans have no idea how to behave in public. You can be a public fan of something and talk passionately about it while still maintaining normal social cues and interactions.

I don't think "etiquette" equates with "norm". Being obnoxious is a bad thing, but if someone is talking about fandom in a public place, wearing fandom-related clothing, engaging in a harmless fandom activity and people judge them then that's the judgers' problem.

I don't think we're having the same conversation. Original anon said about observing social norms, which I took to meaning basic rules of social interaction. You said that you didn't care about that and that people should be themselves, which I took to understand you don't believe there are proper or improper ways to behave in public, just that you should be yourself.

But then you said being obnoxious is a bad thing, which is pretty much what OP is saying so I'm just really confused.

please observe the social norms of the majority whenever possible, and acknowledge that your interests are fringe.

I definitely get the impression that that meant "acknowledge that your hobbies are weird and don't expose people to them because they think you are weird". Like, "acknowledge that your hobbies are fringe"? Maybe it's just me but "fringe" has some pretty strong implications. "Fringe" implies the SPN tinhatters who believe Jensen and Ackles (sp?) are soul mates, or soulbonders, or the Snape wives, or someone else to that extreme, often unhealthy caliber. Ordinary nerdiness is actually pretty common, and I'm not going to act like my hobbies are weird or offensive when they're not.

OA

This exactly. It's how to weave your fannishness into your overall narrative without coming off like a bad stereotype / someone to be ridiculed.

I agree with this up to the point that said fans are not actively ruining anyone else's good time. I went to go see The Avengers some time after the initial opening, and was in the theater with a pack of girls that had seen it several times already--and they were extremely obnoxious. Giggling loudly throughout, literally shrieking during "shippy" moments, shouting memes. I asked them to be quiet to no avail, so I ended up having to leave the theater to get a staff member.

So yes, you can be an excited fan, but there is a time and place for it.

I feel like that's a given and it definitely isn't the sort of thing I was talking about.

Those girls sound really, really annoying. Did they get kicked out?

DA I wish I could agree with your point, but the above has always been like my experience with vocal fans.

Hmm...that seems odd to me. Maybe we're defining it differently? If by "vocal" you mean "loud and don't know when to shut up" then yeah I totally agree. But if you just mean "outspoken" as in, not ashamed of what they like and not willing to put it under wraps just because people don't want to be around nerds then I think we have very different experiences indeed.

Aja makes me so uncomfortable and always has, even before the Daily Dot stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm totally with you on this, but what's Aja's stuff on the Daily Dot and how is it weird?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
na

Basically she thinks there's only one way to do fandom, and that the only real reason anyone wouldn't be very open and outspoken about their participation in fandom is out of personal shame.
