somebody smack some sense into me

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2013-11-07 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've been going to the gym steadily for about two months now. five days a week (recently downgraded from six days a week) I'm there doing 35-60 minute workouts.

yesterday I had a really bad day and couldn't even finish a 30-minute run at my usual comfort speed without stopping for a minute to walk. I run at least 30 minutes daily so it was really startling. for the last ten minutes I was there I felt really winded and out of breath. my calves hurt really bad too. (ETA that I was hydrated and had eaten healthy that day.)

I decided to skip today's workout because it just felt like the right thing to do, and now I'm debating whether I should take the rest of the week off. on the one hand I want to, but on the other hand I'm terrified of getting fat so I'm hesitant.

can I get any opinions on what I should do? keep it up or just skip until monday? I really can't decide and it's driving me nuts.

I'm not an expert by any means on this sort of thing, but I'd suggest working out but stopping if you're feeling really overwhelmed by it. Do something lighter, then, like walking. Maybe it will go away, and if not, maybe see a doctor?

Maybe do lower-intensity workouts every other day? That way you keep the routine and momentum going, but won't end up making things worse.

If it were me, I'd probably do something like deliberately do a slower jog for 30 minutes tomorrow, see how that felt, and ramp up to the more usual exercises if nothing seemed off.

And if you do keep feeling weirdly off, I highly suggest seeing a physician, if that's an option. I had a friend who was super-fit, and exercised all the time, but then kept pushing herself when she started coming down with Mono, and ended up getting much, much sicker for longer than if she'd taken it easy once her body started going "hey! not okay here!".

Taking a few days off because you're not feeling well isn't going to make you fat. Give yourself time to figure out what's going wrong. Maybe try a light workout to see if you're still having problems, but don't push too hard until you're sure you're okay. See a doctor if you're really worried or if things don't return to normal soon.

+1.

Lightening your workout seems the best option, or stopping completely if you experience too much pain. A few days off won't hurt. I know it's annoying, but you need to take care of yourself, and if you have a problem you don't want to make it worse; that'll just take longer to heal.

Rest for some days and when you go back, start with a easier/shorter workout and keep it for a while until you're comfortable with adding more.

But if you are still feeling unusually tired and sore after resting, it's better if you consult a doctor before doing any kind of exercise.

Change your routine? Instead of cardio by running do aerobic exercises or weights.

Also do you have alternating routines? If you're working out on consecutive days you need to give your muscles a rest.

I would do some lighter workouts in a regular routine to help keep the habit while I figured out what long-term changes I wanted to make.

Here's the sense you REALLY need: "getting fat" is neither the end of the world, nor something that will happen if you don't work out for the rest of the week. Your body is telling you you're pushing too hard, and it needs a break or it's not going to work properly for you anymore. It's fine to want to get in shape or stay in shape, but damaging yourself in the pursuit of that goal is counterproductive.

Take a break. Relax. Don't worry about your body forgetting what it's capable of so quickly.

As somebody who lost a ton of weight this year by doing something similar, I kind of share your anxieties - I just don't want to gain back the weight I worked so hard to shed. On the other hand, you do need those breaks as well. It's completely healthy and normal to have a day off from the gym routine, instead go for a walk or just do weights instead of cardio. Something of lower intensity. The calf pain may have been some exercise you did earlier or the way you stretched or something - I remember trying to jog after being on the rowing machine and my calves didn't like it at all.

Fitness world has all these shaming mottos and catch phrases that make you feel like you always need to push yourself, otherwise you're not worth shit, and I'll admit some of the fun is the "pushing yourself" part, but you have to listen to your body. That's how I lost all that weight, I realized working out made me feel good, heavy meals followed up my fatty desserts did not make my body feel good. If it hurts and it's not a good kind of hurt, you have to stop because you can actually hurt yourself.

So here's my new motto: do what feels right, and realize that doing something is always better than doing nothing. Some weeks I can do 60 minute runs or jogs, followed by some jumping rope exercise, some days I can barely do a quick 30 minute walk (like when I'm on my period, I get pretty intense abdominal pains and headaches). But so long as I don't just not do anything, and eat myself sick, that's fine.
