So yesterday at Walmart, some guy comes up to me asking me to sign a petition to get a ballot measure to vote against this law California is passing that requires schools to have unisex bathrooms. I didn't care for his BS, so I said no, but some lady on the other side of the aisle signed it and fuck, I wanted to say something because he was peddling it like girls would be walking on boys using urinals (because stalls don't exist or something). But God forbid anyone take a shit in comfort, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair to the guy, there's a really good chance that he was just collecting signatures for money.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-11-07 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't even think that could have been a possibility.

sorry I'm a little confused, was the petition in support of unisex bathrooms or against them? and would all school bathrooms be unisex? I would hate that.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like the petition was against them--or against a law requiring them.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually kind of hard to tell what they might have been talking about (especially given the fact that I'm not the person who was there).

However, I *think* the bill that the person was referring to was actually the bill passed (AB-1266) which allows transgender students to use school facilities and participate in activities on the basis of their gender identity, and prevents discrimination against trans students. With the line being taken by its opponents that it forces schools to allow students of different genders to use the same bathrooms, or something like that.

Again, I can't be sure, but I'm like 90% confident that's what's going on here. And so the petition is not really in favor of or against unisex bathrooms.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the guy circulating the petition is deliberately misleading people about what the law will do?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I would bet on it.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't sound like it would *do* anything except allow the average person to vote on whether they want the bill to stand. Which is fair, I think, especially when it comes to controversial issues.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
No. Explicitly and expressly no, when those "controversial issues" involve people's rights. Minority rights should not be subject to majority vote.

It was to put it on the ballet, but the guy was obviously against the law. I was reading up on it, and apparently it was just allows transgendered people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
They're trying to get a proposition on the ballot to repeal AB 1266, which allows students in CA to join sex-segregated school programs (including sports teams) and use the restroom facilities that correspond to their gender identities regardless of what gender is indicated on school records.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I'm confused. Are you saying you're INFAVOR of unisex bathrooms in schools?

If so, I have to ask, given the nature of boys in general, school boys being particularly cruel, do you honestly not expect the number of rapes and sexual assaults in schools to skyrocket if unisex bathrooms were allowed?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
a) "requires schools to have unisex bathrooms" =\= "requires schools to exclusively have unisex bathrooms" or "requires students to use unisex bathrooms"

b) the actual law is about allowing transgender students to use bathrooms in line with their gender identity, so that's not even the issue at hand here

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Ok, that's fair enough. OP didn't make that super clear, but yeah, I'm in favour of that.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-11-07 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just repeating what the guy told me.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-11-07 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not all the bathrooms being unisex, just a few for transgendered people. And I'm pretty sure anyone bent on sexually assaulting anyone won't really care if they are in the women's bathroom anyway.

No? But that might be from my thinking men aren't all inherently evil and I'm also not paranoid.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
What about concerns that having just a few unisex bathrooms will just help bullies and transphobes to more readily single out and persecute transgender students?

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-11-07 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
I would have to wonder why those bullies are watching what bathroom anyone goes into.

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2013-11-07 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because that's what bullies do.

I don't think transgender students will be the only ones using these bathrooms. My friends and I sometimes use the men's bathrooms, because they're usually empty, while the women's bathrooms usually have huge lines. A unisex bathroom would just mean more stalls for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Are men inherently evil? Of course not. But are teenagers of both sexes pretty evil-inclined for awhile during their development, with boys in particular tending to be so in more physical ways than girls? Yes. Otherwise high school wouldn't drive so many to bullying-related suicide, which only escalates because adults wave it all off by saying things like "don't be paranoid, they're just kids".

That said, I agree that unisex bathrooms probably wouldn't turn into areas of concentrated teenage evil.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-11-07 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
All I can say is that in my experience, with stuff I have seen in real life, is that teenage boys are usually physical with their friends, like roughhousing or a tamer Jackass. I have never seen anyone physically bullied when I was a teenager, but this was back before anyone took notice of bullying related suicide that didn't involve gay students, but everyone was scared of the bullied students because they thought they were going to shoot up the schools (Colombine had only happened five years prior to my graduation from high school), so this may be influencing my thinking.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-07 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think men are all uniformly evil, and I don't think I'm paranoid either, but I still wouldn't like the idea of running a gauntlet of guys at the urinals while I'm on my way to the stalls.

Of course, making all school bathrooms unisex is not even remotely what the bill does, and it seems like the guy collecting signatures was deliberately misrepresenting it.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-11-07 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they would probably put the urinals in stalls.

And yes he was.
