I bought something already for my dad. He's super easy to shop for. I bought a copy of White Whine (from this blog) which is pretty funny (I bought a copy for myself also) and he likes little trivia/funny story books for putting in the bathroom and reading or putting on his nightstand.

Shopping for my mom is always really, really hard. =/ (anyone have any great gift ideas? I could always use some inspiration...)

Shopping for my friends (I have 2 or 3 I will buy gifts for) isn't that bad. uh. one of them reads f!s so I'm not going to say anything else about that... *shifty look*

My brother is easy to please. My sister likes a lot of things but most of them are beyond my budget; however, I can usually find something that she will appreciate. (I wish I were as good at shopping for her as she is at shopping for everyone. She will pick out clothes for me when my mom is buying them and they're always things that fit my tastes perfectly. No matter what she gets, it's almost always something I adore.)

Ah, yeah, she likes lotions and such. Actually I was thinking about seeing if they had stuff for her at a store near my house that sells soaps, lotions, and other personal items in that vein, but I'm not sure if they're still open. :/ And I'm not sure what she'd want the most, but my sister might be able to help me with that haha, or my dad.

What kind of stuff does your mom like? I'm usually pretty good at coming up with neat little gifts for hard to buy for people. My mom usually gives me five word summaries of her coworkers or links their facebook and now she has an office rep for giving great gifts.

Just last month she told me one of her coworkers she didn't know too well had a lot of magnets and pictures of her family so my mom's contribution to the birthday gift basket was custom magnets of her favorite family photos on facebook. Really cheap and were a big hit. Personalized things always seem to be.

Not my most creative but definitely favorite good idea was when she told me the only thing she knew about her tutor was that she really liked Parks and Rec and doing her nails and we put together a "treat yo self" basket.

Trouble is my mom is picky. She doesn't like a lot of clutter. She buys all her own jewelry through the company she used to work for, and she prefers to buy all her own clothes. She doesn't like lots of knicknacks. Sadly, our fridge is not magnetic (I know, it's really weird...).

My mom isn't very sentimental, at least not outwardly. She's very practical, organized, and thoughtful. She tends to know what she wants and is very specific about it.

As far as stuff she likes? She loves horseracing, dogs, gardening, cooking, reading good books (hm I wonder what's on her reading list right now? not sure how to find out and still be discrete), drinking wine and mixed drinks, and looking more fashionable and put-together than half the people my age. (I don't mean she dresses like someone my age. She doesn't, but she is remarkably good at always putting on something that's cute, polished, and appropriate for the occasion. This is probably a combination of aforementioned organization and planning/thoughtfulness and the fact that she used to sell jewelry as a part-time job, so to increase her success she became a walking advertisement by always dressing extremely well.)

How would she feel about something unusual for her garden--an oriole feeder, or a shelter for mason bees, or a bat house?

That's not a bad idea. My dad is into stuff like that too - he likes wildlife, and he does the vegetable garden so he likes working in the yard too.

She's also sometimes looking for new gardening supplies. That's always worth looking into. :|a

Ooh yeah, minimalist people with specific tastes can be difficult. IDK if a gift to a charity on her behalf is something you'd be interested in but you might look into donating to a sanctuary for ex-racehorses or dogs or something?

I bought this book (mostly based on this review) for a wine/mystery book enthusiast relative and it was a big hit. Never actually read it myself and I know tastes vary.

Gardening has been a goldmine interest for gifting but usually people have a specific taste and style when it comes to gardening and what kind of plants they like(e.g. some people love indoor plants, some people hate them. My mom loves succulents, herbs, and terrariums and is very, very picky when it comes to flowers). You might try poking around the plant sections of pinterest and etsy, that's where I got the idea to by my mom some of those tiny live plant terrarium necklaces and air plants for last mother's day.

I am not a big fan of practical gifts. Gifts should be something whimsical and indulgent the receiver would never or isn't able to treat themselves to. I once spent the better part of a year combing yard sales and auctions to put together the perfect romantically vintage vanity table for my grandmother after she got a fond look in her eyes recalling how she would get up early to watch her mother sit at hers every morning. But unfortunately some people are like my grandfather and the most playful thing they will enjoy receiving is some sentimental engraving on a high quality version of something they use every day. Party poopers.

Aww, but what if a high-quality version of something everyday is</ i> a pleasurable indulgence? Plus, if it gets daily use, it means that person is reminded of you a little every time :)

(I've gotten practical but upgraded gifts I never would have gotten myself that made some common tasks just flow noticeably better or quicker or easier; on the flip-side, I've gotten off-beat gifts that don't really fit any peculiarities of my own -- but I agree it's a rush to give and get unexpected things that end up matching up well!)

I agree with this, for what it's worth. Making a daily task pleasanter and easier can feel like an indulgence. Especially replacing ugly, inefficient equipment with handsome, well-designed things that really work.

My father is easy to shop for, too--he loves books on history. I'm thinking of getting Rick Atkinson's Liberation Trilogy for him.
