Gaaaaah, I haven't even started thinking about presents yet. My dad is simple, I just need to ask him what he wants(he doesn't like surprises). Same with the bf but that's mainly because if I try to surprise him with a game the bugger will have already gotten it for himself.

Everyone else is thankfully easy, I'll end up getting my mum something cat related most likely.

I love it when people tell you what they want. I know some folks like a little surprise, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that, but knowing what they want is so much easier than having to guess. Especially in the case of someone like your bf, because even if you know them extremely well, especially if you know them extremely well, you might buy them something they already own.

It's happened to me before, too.

I think it's the most fun when you have a solid idea of the sort of thing they want, either because you figure it out or they tell you, and then you can pick out something special on your own. But it's so frustrating when you have NO IDEA, and you ask them and they're like "I don't really know" or "you don't have to buy me anything honey!" (gah, I want to! it doesn't have to be expensive or fancy but I want it to be special)

Sometimes if I know someone too well it will make buying them a gift even harder because I over-think the whole thing. So it definitely can be much easier having someone go 'I would like this___'. :P

I feel you on the game front, I had to tell my mum and my sister's fiance right away what I got her. with her fiance on my side, hopefully she won't end up snagging it for herself (she didn't expect me to actually get it for her since it's expensive).

people who tell you what they want are the absolute best. usually my mum and I will make amazon wishlists of all the stuff we could possibly want and then we pick random stuff from each other's lists.

I nearly got my bf a game he'd already gotten the first christmas we were dating, thankfully I double checked before I actually bought it and then realised that he would be much like my father when it comes to getting gifts for him.

Hmmm, that Amazon wishlist idea is a good one actually. I might have to see about getting some people I know to do that together so we can sort of surprise each other.
