I don't know if they are horribly terrible, but I think they both overact. I could not watch some of their scenes in STID because they were so cringey.

I prefer the originals but they're still there to watch when I want to. I can't think who I'd rather have as Kirk and Spock, and seeing as it's somewhat of a reimagining I'm okay wit hthem being different.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind Pine so much because lets face it, Shatner wasn't exactly an acting paragon (he brings the ham to every deep space mission), but I do think Quinto and Pegg have a tendency to over act.

I can't watch Quintos 'Khannnnn' with a straight face.

Urban is by far the best casting out of all of them.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
True story: Shatner did a Q&A at Salt Lake ComicCon, and someone asked him who he wanted to play him in the autobiographical film. He didn't even miss a beat when he answered "Chris Pine."

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think Quinto's was a lot less cringey than Shatner's Khannnnnn, personally

Oh, the "Khaannnnnn" was terrible. I can't believe they thought that was a good idea. Totally ruined the scene.

to be fair it isn't Quinto's fault if Lindelof wrote such a ridiculous scene
I feel for the poor guy there was no way he could save that part

i'm wondering if the OP has anyone they'd prefer

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I find Pine okay because I never really cared much about Kirk, but I have so much dislike for Quinto's Spock, and I completely agree. I don't have a better alternative off the top of my head, but I'm sure there must be one.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
ITA. Quinto's Spock always looks angry or hot-headed imo, which isn't how Spock should be at all. I know it's a reboot and they're going for different interpretations of the characters, but Spock should be someone who comes across as aloof and unemotional. If anything, he is more unemotional than other Vulcans because he feels he needs to prove to everyone that he is a "real" Vulcan.

Quinto's Spock just looks constantly constipated and ready to punch someone. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I like Pine's Kirk just fine -- and no, it's not his looks -- but vastly prefer Nimov's Spock.

That sucks. Ah, well, just one more movie and then give it ten years and we'll have another reboot. Then maybe you'll like those actors.

That's really the nicest thing I can think to say. Sorry it's not as hopeful as you probably want it to be.

Kirk is fine but I really don't like Quinto as Spock.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
The Star Trek reboot is just a fun, over-the-top action-adventure series. I don't think it would really matter who was in the lead roles.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Star Wars is just a fun, over-the-top action-adventure series too, but do you remember how fucking ridiculous everyone was about those prequels? Same thing--people take their iconic franchises very, very seriously.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the Quinto!Spock hate comes from people not understanding the difference between young, arrogant, by-the-book Spock and Nimoy's seasoned space-buddy vibe. Or at least, not understanding that there is a difference, and it is intentional. Nimoy's Spock also didn't lose his entire planet.

I don't care if people hate Quinto's acting, or think he doesn't look the part, but preferring one Spock over the other is fine as long as you realize they're supposed to be different characters. And maybe this young upstart Spock will get his shit together and become the old school Spock we all know and love, but for now of COURSE he's not the same guy. None of the characters are. It's an AU reboot, and if Quinto's Spock was behaving like Nimoy's in the wake of colossal tragedy and extremely difficult working conditions, I'd be pretty annoyed.

I like Chris Pine as Kirk. But I am still not much of a fan of Quinto as Spock. He's the only casting I don't really care for.

Pine doesn't bother me. Quinto does.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-11-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I blame Abrams, Orci, et. al..

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
tbh, if I could have Nimoy's Spock and Pines Kirk I'd be pretty content.
Pine has that charm and charisma perfect and Nimoy is just the perfect Spock, period.

I don't have a HUGE issue with Quinto's Spock, but yeah I agree he seems to angry and emotional for someone who is supposed to repress his emotions and only act human very subtlety. Shatner has always been too ham for my tastes.

Is it the actors or is it the shitty writing?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-11-12 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I think they did well with what they had to work with, it's just that what they had to work with really fucking sucked.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Wrong opinion is wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a different problem OP: I love both the actors and I think they do a great job with the characters but I despise their so called epic ~friendship
I think that the scenes where they're together are so forced that it makes no favor to either of them. What's the critic that said they're turning Kirk and Spock into respectful caricatures of the original? He was spot on with that.
