Why not both?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-11-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)

I'm working on a fic idea. If I manage to do it it's going on ff, ao3 and tumblr because why not maximize exposure? It's a fanfic site, not a publishing contract.

I post everything both places. And I'm very happy to get kudos or reviews or even just be able to look at reader statistics and see that people are paying attention.

Same.

(Though I have to admit that it drives me nuts to see a fic get a ton of hits but no reviews, because then I wonder "Did they read to the end, or did they get bored part of the way in and just click away?" :p )

Yeah, there is that. I mostly watch stats for my two multiparters though, so if you've gotten to the latest chapter, chances are you liked the earlier ones as well. There is always a pretty big drop-off from the first chap to the second but that's okay. I check out a lot of fic only to decide within the first couple of paragraphs that it's not for me.

*nods* Yeah I have always assumed (at least on FF.net) the "lots of hits on ch 1" is because, unless you explicitly edit the URL to go to a later chapter (or go to a new chapter via email) clicking the story link always takes you to ch 1.

Yeah, that definitely would have an effect, plus anyone who hasn't seen the fic before since it just popped up to the top of the list with an update. So as long as the middle chapters get a bunch of new hits, I'm pretty happy.

heh, I wish someday they'd allow one to filter hits by "day of month" as well. I only have 40 or so stories on FFnet, but when I see a sudden spike if it's later in the month it's a pain to select each story in turn to see if it's the one getting the hits that day. (This is why I usually only check hits near the beginning of the month, because it's easier to see what's getting the traffic.)

You are wise, and therefore undoubtedly in the minority. Sadly, for some people it seems that they have more fun indulging in "either/or" battles than tin being practical and non vitriolic by taking the "and" option.

I can understand that you might want to limit it to one because it's easier--like that one anon higher in the thread who responds to every comment. that and you might prefer to LINK people to a certain site. It's the rivalry I don't get.

I definitely only link to AO3 because I like its set-up much more. I also pretty much only read fic there, unless I see a rec. But everything I have up on AO3 is up on FF.Net (though the opposite isn't true, since some of my older FF.Net stuff is cringe-inducing now).

Remember, if you can work in a Buffy character for even a single sentence or reference then you can also post to Twisting the Hellmouth as well.

Awwwwww. Don't badmouth TtH. :) I love that site (and the crossovers don't have to include BtVS).

If they don't include BtVS then there isn't much of a Hellmouth twisting going on is there now. I have fond memories of TtH, but all the stories eventually track back to having Xander become a girl at Halloween.

Heee. I am particularly partial to Buffy being related to Captain America.

(I think those may have been the original rules, but unless I'm remembering incorrectly, I think the site has some stories with no Buffy. I freely admit I misremember often.)

For me, the biggest reason I don't cross-post to AO3 and FFN is because I write M+ rated fics. The pre-slash stories I have posted on FFN don't violate their TOS, and AO3 doesn't have that restriction. Explicit (sex, violence, gore) stories are welcome on AO3, but they're not marketing themselves as a site for the under-18 crowd either.

And AO3 has a much friendlier posting interface than FFN.

All of this. AO3 has less clutter and grown readers and writers.

I was writing for my drawer for years before I started posting, so Kudos is a nice bonus.

I want your icon. May I take it? And with what credits?

You are welcome to take my icon. As for credit, it was made over ten years ago and I honestly don't remember by whom.

I understand that, I probably have a pile in that condition in my collection.

Re: Why not both?

The only time I don't post my stories to both sites is when a story is too explicit for me to feel comfortable posting it on FFnet, and that's really only because I have extreme difficulty breaking rules. :)

Yeah, same here. The reason I got an AO3 account in the first place was so I would have a place to put my smutty stories. Because rules.
