Compare the average number of reviews for fics in the same fandom on both platforms and you'll see.

Compare the average number of HITS while you are at it. Pretty sure you're almost always going to have more readers on FF.Net.

Well, yeah, that was the point I was wondering about.

If ff.net gets more comments, it's probably b/c there are more readers, not because AO3 people are mean and stingy and don't want to leave comments.

(Though of course there's nothing wrong with posting wherever you want. I usually post to both and ff.net maybe gets a slightly higher comment total, but the ff.net comments are more likely to be moronic, tbh.)

Yeah, FF.Net reviews can be pretty dull. Content-wise, they are pretty much identical to a kudos at least 9 times out of 10 (probably more).

I don't usually find them dull, more like hilarious or offensive...

but yeah, I don't think either platform really encourages substantive commenting. That probably has as much to do with people downloading fic to read offsite as it does with anything, though.

I think it would be interesting if all the people who talk about wanting more substantive commentary on fic would set up a community or forum to produce that outcome -- there might be something like that, but I haven't come across it.

Yeah, I get when people wish there was more substantive commenting but I really don't get that from FF.Net and I never have.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-14 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
about getting comments... there's was a barter review system on one fanwork contest, where people from different teams exchanged reviews. It was a good way to get something other than 'it was great'.
That was not in Eng, so no link.

Anecdotal evidence, but an example: I posted a fic on Ao3 4 months ago. It has 21,000+ hits, 1000+ kudos, and 68 reviews.
On ff.net I posted it 3 months ago, it has 5,000+ hits, 61 reviews, and almost 400 favorites. Clearly here there's a WAY higher ratio of reviews-to-hits on ff.net.

Another fic has 16 reviews to 1k hits on ff.net, with 31 to 4k hits on Ao3 (still a higher ratio of reviews on ff.net).
Now, a third fic of mine in that fandom somehow garnered a much higher review count on Ao3, with an average of 7 per chapter on ff.net but 25 per chapter on Ao3. On the other hand, the chapters average 2000 views per chapter on Ao3, but only 600 on ff.net.

So from this sampling of one fandom where I've posted the same fics on both sites, I can conclude that the review-to-hit ratio is higher on ff.net than on Ao3, even though I've gotten way more traffic on Ao3.

That's interesting ... and the complete opposite of what I've seen between the two sites. The stats of my one fic I posted lower in this thread are pretty typical for what I've posted, including fics in other fandoms.

like I said, it's all anecdotal until somebody does a more widespread study XD
Then again, a lot of the stuff people complain about with ff.net reviews hasn't happened to me. I appear to have a relatively high number of reviewers who wax eloquent (as opposed to "nice!"), and I haven't gotten much entitlement, either.

It also probably depends on fandom and stuff... I can't really compare with other fandoms, 'cause until recently I basically only posted on ff.net and LJ and didn't do much with my Ao3 account.

Surely depends on the fandom and the author, though.

Actually, sure, let's do this! I will compare stats on one of my in-progress fics, Between the Sun and the Moon (FF.Net | AO3).

FF.Net

Hits: 5,027
Reviews: 21 (0.4% of readers)
Alerts: 75 (1.5%)
Favourites: 31 (0.6%)

AO3

Hits: 1,261
Subscriptions: 12 (0.95%)
Kudos: 23 (1.8%)

So yeah ... most of them have less than 1% difference. That's not enough for me to consider one site to really be all that different from the other.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think it also depends on where you think kudos fall within the range of feedback. Because to me, the kudos + comments would mean a greater percentage of feedback on AO3 compared to FFnet.

For my purposes, I'm sort of going with the idea that favourites = kudos, even though I know that's not quite true.

This thread is the first time I'm hearing the "favorites = kudos" thing for FFN. I've always thought of Favorites as being more akin to bookmarking, and that's generally how I've always treated it.
