If you think that the fill completely missed the point of your prompt, then how can you take credit for it? You can't have it both ways, no matter how much of an asshole you are.

Who the hell cares about the person who makes the initial prompt? Pretty sure there's not "credit" to be had.

I know, right? I've never seen anybody go, 'Awesome story! Tell me who gave you the prompt so I might shower them with internet cookies and asspats!' That never happens.

That's not entirely true. They might not be on the same level as the fic writer, but it's good form to acknowledge when you write a story based off a prompt.

lololol anon you're actually awesome. i love your sense of entitlement, probably because i've been in a similar position and have had amazing prompts mangled into terrible fics BUT CAN STILL SEE A GLIMMER OF MY OWN GENIUS THERE, THE BEST PART OF THE WHOLE DAMN MESS and i'm like

GIVE IT BACK

but it's gone

i'm feelin ya.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. And I don't even care if it makes me an asshole--it's getting to the point that I write secondary fills for my own prompts when I think the original fill is shitty.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Sure it's entitled, but whenever I see lots of comments on a fic I wrote the prompt for I'm always like 'Well, you wouldn't have these adoring fans if it wasn't for me, would you? Ha!'

And then I continue to lurk and work on the size of my ego.

Not even a "Thanks for the fill."?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Bad form, madam/sir, bad form. Even if they missed the point of the prompt or the fill was badly written, they still deserve a thank you. The only time a fill wouldn't deserve one, would be if it was deliberately malicious (like if it included something the prompter specifically asked not to be included in the fill - a trigger, a couple the prompter doesn't care for, etc.).

Re: Not even a "Thanks for the fill."?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. OP doesn't even have to say a word about the fic itself, even "Thanks for writing for my prompt!" would be better than nothing. Fandom should be about spreading sunshine, not raining on your fellow fans, OP.

Re: Not even a "Thanks for the fill."?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like not wanting the fill to be badly written is kind of a given with prompting. And everyone's MMV on that one. Like, you wouldn't thank a chef or the waitstaff for a badly cooked meal at a restaurant - the polite thing in that case is to be civil but not disingenuous about the meal, and certainly not to be rude. Sure, there isn't money involved in a kink meme, but when both the prompt and the fill are freely given but the fill disappoints the prompter but isn't actively malicious, silence might be the best course.

Anyway, it sounds like this story got enough feedback and popularity that the fact that the prompt writer didn't reply doesn't matter much.

Really, what's the deal with prompts anyway? A prompt could be as amazing and original as hell and still no one would give a shit until there's a finished product to represent it, and I think that's the way it should be. Don't we all have That Amazing Idea for a book or a screenplay or whatever that if only we could just get down on paper would be So Special And Awesome. But it's never going to be any of that until you actually write the book/screenplay, or get someone else to do it for you. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Having taken terrible, bland, boring, and poorly thought out prompts and deliberately "missed the point" to make something that was very well received before myself, I'd say they don't owe you any credit. In fact, it seems like they made something well-liked in spite of your prompt, not because of it >>

I've only ever requested a fic on a kink meme once.

And somehow the fill managed to hit most of my nope points and overall left me pretty grumpy. Not even because it was a fic I didn't like written for my prompt, but just because reading fic like that period makes me grumpy.

Fandom loved it of course. I still see it recommended all over the place. Oh well.

(I don't feel any desire to 'take credit' for the prompt though. That seems very silly to me. It's just a prompt.)

I hate when a prompter comes up with things like 'I imagined a different kind of fic' to a fill. Yeah, well, eather you'd have given more details or, you know, writren a fill yourself.
