OK, but do you also want every comic about a Christian superhero to deal with the homophobia and anti-Semitism in the Christian community?

Because that'd be a heck of a lot of comics.

It's not the same, but to speak for OP, probably?

This is the most boring complaint. 'But what about all the other things I have no idea if you complain about, what about them??'.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maybe we can have a comic about a superhero living in a Christian country where being gay gets you stoned or beaten...oh wait...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I sincerely hope you are not trying to claim that only govt action counts, and that no-one is hurt for being gay in a Christian country. Because I, my son and his partner, set upon in the street and hospitalised by a bunch of yobs for holding hands, would like to tell you to *shut the hell up* if that's what you are trying to claim.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Horrible people exist everywhere, they're in charge in the Islamic countries.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
as well as Christian countries... as a gay person, I don't really want to go to Uganda (or most of Christian Africa either, tbh). even in Western Christian majority countries, gay people still get beat up and murdered. so...

Welcome to Russia.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
hey! though with all the new laws I wonder... But Russia's mostly awesome!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Mte, unfortunately. I'm not Russian (I'm from a neighboring country), so I cannot speak of own experience, but according to all the reports from Russia I've read, it seems that it is a tough place for homosexuals and that the situation is even worsening.

The X-Men have dealt with Christian prejudice a lot, especially Nightcrawler and Wolfsbane.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
This! Also, God Loves Man Kills.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol lbr no way it's going to even be remotely critical about the problematic elements of Islamic faith. People just prefer to put their fingers in their ears and pretend they don't exist while lashing out at other religions for the same exact problems.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Meant to respond to OP

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, isn't her brother supposed to be an extremist and her family really conservative? From the article I read, it sounds like her brother is potentially a dangerous guy.

But on the other hand, frankly? Islam gets so much criticism, I don't know where you're getting that "people pretend the problematic elements don't exist" because I don't know what world you're living in, people pretend the exact opposite - that Islam has no redeeming values. If this comic can star a normal Western Muslim girl, whose faith is important to her but doesn't define her, and is ultimately relatable to all Western girls... good for it. There aren't enough "normal" Muslims in the media.

Kamala will face struggles outside her own head, including conflicts close to home. “Her brother is extremely conservative,” Ms. Amanat said. “Her mom is paranoid that she’s going to touch a boy and get pregnant. Her father wants her to concentrate on her studies and become a doctor.” Next to those challenges, fighting supervillains may be a respite.

You mean someone who is more than just a list of demographics and labels? Blasphemy.

Living in the world of "those people who are bending over backwards trying not to be Islamophobic", I imagine.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the anon you're replying to, but I think s/he meant that Islam doesn't really get criticized in liberal circles. If you look at the population as a whole then yes, it's a religion that is constantly under scrutiny, but in liberal circles it is generally Christianity, a religion that most Americans are much more familiar with, where every problematic element is exposed and dissected.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to the book. I think Western comics need more openly spiritual and/or religious characters that aren't caricatures, tbh. It would be great if people from different backgrounds would be able to relate to her, like you said.

How many openly Christian superheroes are there? Besides Daredevil.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
If you're talking about ones who actually practice the religion, not many. But a lot of superheroes come from Christian cultural backgrounds, usually of the WASP variety.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Tons. http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/comic_book_religion.html

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Please, any Christian character in pop culture today is automatically a caricature of a bible thumper.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
In this context Christian does not necessarily refer to the religion.

If you think there is no homophobia or anti-Semitism among secular people with Christian cultural backgrounds, you're very naïve.

If you even think it's slightly close to equal you are utterly disconnected from the world around you.

If your story deeply digs into a particular culture or a particular time, rather than just using it as a jumping-off point or a background, I think you have some obligation to show the bad as well as the good. It sounds like this comic will discuss conservative Islam in detail, so it would be a bit one-sided if it was only positive (or only negative, for that matter.)
