Nothing will be ridiculousness like that person who wanted a TW for gum.

Is there a story to go with that? I want to know why gum could possibly need a trigger warning.

Some Tumblr posted something with gum. Someone messaged them asking them to TW it. The blogger, laughed and post many pictures of gum. Anon got mad about that and basically ranted at them. Everyone had a good laugh (except for SJWs probably). They most likely wrote blog posts about how that Tumblr was intentionally triggering people.

I want to know why gum could possibly need a trigger warning.

Choking phobia maybe? I had an incident a couple of years ago where I got a large piece of hard candy stuck in my throat and seriously freaked out thinking that I would choke to death (I already had a mild choking phobia before this happened). Luckily my mother was with me at the time and kept me calm and even phoned a medical centre for advice.

I now tend to get freaked out by things like hard candy, or gum, or other such things. Even just watching other people eat them can trigger my phobia really badly... saying all that though, I'd still never demand, or even expect, someone to put a trigger warning on a picture of gum! That's just silly!

That's just the only reason I can imagine that someone might be triggered by gum.

that was very informative, thanks

Incorrect, in this case. Phobia triggers are actually genuine triggers. The term is used for similar mechanisms across multiple mental illnesses.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, but no one actually uses the word in fandom that way. "Trigger" in fandom is the equivalent of YOU ARE CAUSING ME PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ANGUISH AND I'M GOING TO DIE IF YOU DON'T TONE IT DOWN. A picture of a spider would "trigger" arachnophobia, but "fandom trigger" is far more akin to the PTSD definition.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
(DA) Maybe I'm just being dense here, but I don't quite understand why a PTSD trigger wouldn't count as the same sort of trigger as the "you're causing me mental and physical anguish" type? A PTSD trigger can cause emotional distress and panic attacks just like other triggers. So I don't see why it shouldn't be classed as such?

Imo, a "normal" phobia is different from a phobia that's borne from a traumatic event; Eg. I'd considered someone's phobia of water (if the phobia came about due to that person nearly drowning) as being far more serious, and worthy of being considered a trigger, than my own arachnophobia which didn't stem from anything traumatic.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
How?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
dunno, there's a blog that tags practically everything with "carpophobia"
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-11-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
.....*googles* Huh. At least it is not the fear of "carp" like I originally thought.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but there is. There was a fill on the Dragon Age kink meme featuring a female character. As kink meme fills are wont to be, it was a porn fill for a porn prompt. The author used the word "squelch" once or twice. Cue the prompter tearing into the fill, full-rage-mode, how that word triggered them and how dare they use that word in the fill! They really should have put up a warning!

Wat.

I am going to start telling people they need to TW for words that rhyme with -ump. I hate those words. Also, how do you trigger word for a word?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
After that, I thought about writing a general TW for all my fills that said "TW: Words. This fic may contain words. If you are offended or triggered by words, please do not read further."

But that would probably have gotten deleted for passive aggressive wank or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-19 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
While I like your Trigger Warning, it contains words. Can you do a pictogram or something?
gondremark: (Carter WTF)

[personal profile] gondremark 2013-11-19 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
No you can't! I don't like pictograms because they are shallow and silly and therefore trigger great annoyance in me!
You must now add a trigger warning for mention of pictograms.

That happened? I did not see that fill. Damn, I missed something good. Please tell me people defended the author.

I had an excessively long comment tearing you a new asshole because I misread "gum" as "gun." Then I turned my computer off and rethought my life choices.

I really wish more people would do that whole "take a minute and come back" thing. It'd prevent so many arguments. Now, though, it's "get everything out while I'm still furious" most of the time. I see that a lot with Tumblr, and I really believe it has to do with the way microsecond blogging has affected the thought process. It's like "get it out now because an hour later it's old news and 'you're late; not worth the reply' is all you'll get at best".

(There's no such thing as "late" for me; if you answer my comment now or six months from now or two years from now, I'll read it and respond if there's a response to be given. But I'm all old fashioned and stuff.)

trident warning?
