getting annoyed at atheists for being dumb dicks on the internet =/= oppression

esp when many people mocking them are probably also atheists (and also the initial person was probably a troll so this is really just a pointless debate overall) (and we call the act... The Internet!)

Intellectual opression is a thing: you're opressing my believes that there's no God. No one is saying that atheists are murdered for nor believing in- Oh wait, they are in certain countries.

Oh, god, that episode broke my heart so badly I cried at random intervals for ages.

I know an author who switched to self-publishing to avoid the hassle of dealing with publishers. Her husband is an editor so they work together on her novels and she makes a much higher percentage from the sales which usually (but not always) means making a lot more money on each book.

So how is saying that there's no heaven being a dumb dick? Am I a dick if I say that Earth is round?

It's not oppression, but I'm sure as hell not gonna tell most religious that I don't believe in a god.

OK, since you asked so politely:

Someone calling you pretentious on the internet does not equal oppression, and if you think otherwise you're spending too much time on tumblr.

Also, the existence of an afterlife cannot be proven or disproven. To state that "there is no Heaven" as if it's an objective fact makes you come off as smug and obnoxious, and I say this as an atheist.

Um, because it's a dick move to say that an afterlife doesn't exist when a believer confesses in a personal secret that she's upset something she cares about won't be there. I mean, it's just basic human decency to not be an ass about something like this. OP isn't trying to convert everyone or drastically alter society, s/he is just expressing a personal belief. I know it's the internet, but manners do not suddenly cease to exist.

I'd try regular publishing before self-publishing. It CAN be profitable, but you gotta have a LOT of energy and a LOT of people's skills for it to work. The consensus is that the reward/effort ratio is pretty abysmal in general.

Most of the jobs I've cashiered at still required me to clean bathrooms. XD; Lucky for you though if you don't anymore! That's pretty much the worst part about working in retail/foodservice.

Saw the first two episode and loved the hell out of it, see *all kinds* of shipping potential between John and Dorian.

I love the slightly Blade Runner air to it, love the little twist on things (DNA bomb!), really like the look of it. Plus, i thought the two leads had good chemistry that will only get better, the story was interesting (second ep was a bit eh re: topic, but still interesting) and it had its funny moments, too.

I shall definitely be watching!

I just did my cashier training a couple weeks ago! I'm so relieved that I don't have to go out in the cold anymore.

Yeah, that's something I wonder about because of what's shown in the books, but it's also from Lyra's point of view, and she's in a class above them and a kid, so she can generalize. I think that society's expectations would somewhat shape a person's daemon so a lot of soldiers and servants would end up with canines. Like a nobleman wouldn't want to hire someone with a tiger daemon because he might feel threatened and accuse them of "acting above their station."

If I recall correctly, Wil Wheaton self publishes most (all?) of his books these days because he can make more money and avoid the hassle of jumping through legal hoops. He's written quite a bit about self publishing.

But in fairness, HDM canon (or at least Lyra's perhaps-unreliable twelve-year-old opinion) does say servants usually have dog daemons.

According to that logic, saying that unicorns and dragons don't exist is smug and obnoxious.

I haven't watched it but if people keep comparing it to Blade Runner I'm going to have to.
