I don't know about that, I feel like if a relationship starts out when there's a huge power imbalance and age gap, just waiting until they're legal doesn't change that.

that still doesn't make it totally creepy?

seriously, mayfly-december romances are a big popular thing. same as bodyguard crushes. so long as there isn't rapey shit or ageing-the-body-but-not-the-mind dynamics, it's fine.

"Mayfly-December"?

Is this a typo or is he immortal?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

...isn't he? I thought demons lived forever.

ayrt

It was a serious question, I don't know the source material.

IIRC he's an uber powerful dog-like spirit monster who's already lived several centuries by the time the series begins, and he's still relatively young for one of his kind. So it's to be expected, if he doesn't die in battle, he's going to live for several centuries more.

I think Mayfly-December is a category on tv tropes.

"Mayfly-December Romance" is a term for a relationship in which one of the pair is going to live much, much longer than the other (usually supernaturally-derived), so that the other partner has a lifespan like a mayfly in comparison.

Personally to me there's a difference between 'starting with a power/age imbalance and living together until they're legal' and 'starting with a power/age imbalance and not seeing each other until they're legal'.

The first situation could come across as skeevy and grooming, whereas to me there isn't anything wrong with the second one because just meeting someone when you're young and then being with them when you're old (with no or minimal contact between those stages) doesn't feel like the older person is grooming the younger or taking advantage of what could be considered a position of power in the younger person's life.

Also, this secret reminds me of a recent rant on fanficrants, and I have to wonder if the secret-maker is the person that person was ranting about...

Agreed with your first point.

Pretty sure Rin saw Sess though. He brought her stuff and checked on her.

True, but the actual raising was being done by Kaede, and what we saw of his visits they were very short. I don't think that would lead to the same skeevy kind of imbalance in a future relationship that actually living together and him raising her would, though of course YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhm, no, him going to see her regularly really kind of gives the impression that if he does get with her in the future, he was waiting for her to grow up, no matter how short the visits are.

I'm sorry, but he pretty much raised her for an entire year, and he's still an authority in her life. That's really freakin' skeevy.

Thinking bout it, is basically "the time traveler's" wife in that aspect.

And you don't see people flipping their shit over that one.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
er, people most certainly did. it's just not really the kind of movie to garner a fandom so the crit was mostly in certain places and the odd belated tumblr post
