Yeah, this trend is getting on my nerves as well.
I think the most dramatic example was this tumblr that was doing some kind of experiment idk, basically providing some huge number of just character designs. And it had a fandom. Like people were getting all excited about these /character designs/ with no personality and no nothing.
I see that with AUs, too, I mean why else would all these random AUs with no connection to the original but character names be so popular?

I don't want to tell people how to enjoy or not enjoy their fandom, but I wish more people cared about solid canons and canon-related fanworks.
