Uh, no. Maybe they can be a "Go to watch your friend play a game" since watching someone play =/= playing.

And honestly, the gameplay part does matter. If it didn't, instead of games they would be making movies or another kind of media.

The secret was worded "they call themselves fans" not "they call themselves gamers". The fitting analogy would be "You are not a true basketball fan if you only follow the game on TV and have never been to a real game".
