Um..some of us watch Let's Plays because we don't really have the money to buy 60 dollars per fuckin' game. Steam makes it cheap, yes, but you do have to get a PC that can run games first. The latter can be pretty expensive and/or time consuming. Let's Play, which are free, are a little bit more economical. Especially if one is curious about the game and not sure if they want to drop some money on it.

Let's Plays are essentially an extension of "Go play a game at your friend's house." Expect for Friends, it's strangers. If you think there isn't anything wrong with people doing that with friends, then you shouldn't have a problem with let's plays.

You still get the canon. You still to experience the story. Why does it matter how you get there?

Also, way to throw in that misogynistic attitude at women at the end. It's not like there are guys who do the same thing.

This.
I don't have $200+ to drop on a console alone, much less the games, so yeah, I'm going to watch LPs instead.
Also LPs are great for those times when I've aggravated my carpal tunnel and can't even hold a controller.

OP here

If you pay 60 dollars for a game you're doing it wrong IMO. Gaming is cheap if you know where to look and let's face it, pirating is an option too.

I'm not against LP's per se. Sometimes they're good to have if the game is unattainable or a genre you're not into.

That said, game developers put a lot of effort into combining the story and gameplay in innovative ways. Interactivity is the entire CORE of many games so it's frustrating to come across people who just passively watch someone else's playthrough and then pretend to have a meaningful opinion of the entire product.

If you only watched an LP of Journey you'd never have a complete idea of how good the controls feel or how exciting it is to explore the levels by yourself. You only watched a pretty little movie while the game itself is so much more than that.

Also, misogyny where? Most of my girl friends DO have a weaksauce attitude towards gaming. None of my male friends do. I was not making a generalization at any point.

Games ARE that expensive in Australia. Well done on completely disregarding the antipodes.

Joke's on you, games are expensive in my country as well. Seriously only a dumbass will walk into a store, pick a game and pay 60 bucks for it. Unless, of course, you're a huge fan of a franchise and can't wait a few weeks to find the damn thing used on Ebay.

Oh shut up, I'm from NZ. I pay about as much for a game as I do for your average DVD. Steam + internet + second hand sales. Just don't buy them brand new at EB and you're sorted.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. $60 is *cheap* for a new game in Australia. If stores hadn't embraced the second hand industry then a lot of us would barely get to play at all.

I've only watched the LP of Journey because PS3 costs the equivalent of my family's monthly spendings, you asshole. I'd have loved to play it by myself, but I have to let my family eat sometimes. Thanks for rubbing it in my face.

What about console games? I play pretty much every game I'm interested on PCs due to patience and gaming sales. I pay attention to Steam, GMG, GoG, etc. But I really can't justify paying hundreds for a PS3 (and now a PS4) for the few exclusives I really want to play/experience.

I agree that interactivity is the core of many games (that's part of what makes stuff like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us favorites of mine) but that's not the case for ALL games, and I don't think people HAVE to experience that to enjoy some of the story. Say you want the story for a pretty linear game, Assassin's Creed for example. What makes the gameplay experience necessary for experiencing that story.

And oh yeah, your personal experiences totally represent everyone everywhere. /sarcasm

Two things.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-11-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I have to pay $60 for a game if I don't want to be spoiled for the ending. Certain games, like Bioshock Infinite, I'll pay because I know damn well there's going to be a twist and that people are going to spill the beans. If I couldn't afford that I would have watched an LP so I could have at least seen the story unspoiled.

2. I refuse to pirate a new game. The only instance where I did so was Oblivion, because it had been out for a bit and I borrowed a friend's copy to make sure it would actually run on my old laptop. If there had been a demo I wouldn't have done that. Pirating new games means the company doesn't see that people actually like it--they might not make more of the same, and they might not reward the actual creatives who made it. Pirating indie games is like kicking a puppy.

3. I can pretty much discount the opinion of anyone who uses the word "weaksauce." You sound like someone who thinks identifying as a "gamer" is meaningful.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
yeah well maybe you aren't a "real" gamer if you pirate games rather than support the people who make him. at least the people who watch let's plays have some integrity

AYRT

I'm sorry, but I live in the US where gaming is cheaper and it still IS expensive. I can't drop 30 bucks on a game I may not even like. Good for you that you have a well paying job! I don't and neither does my fiance. And while we pinched pennies and saved up to buy a gaming pc, Steam still hurts our wallets. Even when something is on sale, it still adds up. I hate to use this but your class privileged is blinding you to the fact that not everybody is like you. Not everyone is in a position to do such a thing. I'm sorry, that's a reality.

If I can get about 20 comic titles for the same price as ONE NEW GAME IN THE US, that really tells you something. Because, my friend, comics aren't a cheap 1hobby either.

Misogyny comes from the fact that you're targeting just girl gamers. Gaming has enough issues with the "fake geek girl" or girls being in their space in general. Gaming is not generally considered a "girl thing." And you're playing up on that attitude. That hurts and continues the stereotype.

I don't care if you geek girlfriends do this. Don't lump all the girls into that generalization.

Re: OP here

"Developers put a lot of effort in" but "piracy is an option".

Your priorities are a bit fucked there, mate.

Also, this "Piracy is an option" thing. For one thing, no it's not, not for all of us (region locking, limited download data, etc), and for another, we shouldn't *have* to pirate just to make you happy.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
If you pay 60 dollars for a game you're doing it wrong IMO.

Jesus H. No, you're doing it LEGALLY. At least when it comes to new games.

Old games, sure, you can get for cheap via digital download. But ROMs are technically illegal if you don't own a legal copy of the game first.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not a mysogynist for calling out gamers who don't really play the game. You can criticize women all you want and, guess what? You're right to do so!

However, piracy is NOT an option. I'm all for buying games on sale and even buying used copies, but piracy is outright stealing and it does hurt the industry. Piracy is why we have shitty DRM and it's a big cause of high prices.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Let's Plays are essentially an extension of "Go play a game at your friend's house.""

Uh, no. Maybe they can be a "Go to watch your friend play a game" since watching someone play =/= playing.

And honestly, the gameplay part does matter. If it didn't, instead of games they would be making movies or another kind of media.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Dreamfall might've as well been a movie imho.

THANK YOU. I have a computer that was supposed to be able to play super awesome games... Except it can't. I can't afford a new one or the upgrades, so instead I'm stuck watching LP's (with no commentary) on Youtube (Bioshock 1-3, if you must know).

to be fair, my laptop, which is pretty old and shitty, plays games alright, though it's not perfect. The graphics have to be lowered a little bit. I've played ME2 and 3 on here and also Skyrim, though I have a feeling Skyrim would be better on a PC.

That's a small quibble, though. I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly.
