Re: I'm going to chime in here

That's why I made it clear (I'd hoped) that I don't think what's true for me is automatically true for everyone. But I say that MOST people would agree with me because otherwise games wouldn't exist as they do now. If most gamers were perfectly content watching LP's then we would just have 20-hour movie-type things, not games as they exist today.

And I really really hope I didn't imply that playing the game makes me a better fan. I just meant that personally I find playing the game to be a more fulfilling experience than watching LPs, and that I think I'm in the majority there. Reaching the end of a game and seeing the conclusion of a story is an accomplishment if you've played the game. Even if the story is completely linear, by reaching the end, you have to have at some point done something to reach that point. You have, in some way, caused the conclusion to happen. It's a feeling that may still be there in LPs, but I feel that it will inevitably be muted by the change in medium.

This is not me feeling like I'm better than people who watch LP's. It's me saying that I think (for most people! Not everyone.) that they might enjoy playing the game much better than just watching it.

nayrt, but fwiw, I think you were clear and generally agree, even though I'm probably about 50-50 between playing and LP-ing a game. Though the difference between a playthrough and LP for me, besides availability (cost/game age/language barrier, etc.), is mostly whether it's actually fun to play vs. whether the story is engaging, and if the LPer is incisive or funny. Sometimes gameplay is bad or frustrating enough to break immersion on its own. And sometimes, it's fun to watch an LP after playing a game I found terrible for some commiseration.
